Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Penthouse

Back in Chicago twenty-four hours later, rain was pouring over the city, echoing the night of my wedding.

I walked into the grand lobby of my skyline penthouse building. Standing near the elevators, clutching designer handbags and looking frantically at their phones, were Vanessa and Chloe.

When the elevator doors opened and I stepped out into the private foyer, Vanessa instantly rushed toward me, her face contorted in rage and desperation.

"You!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing her manicured finger at my chest. "What have you done to my son?! He called me from a holding cell at O'Hare! He's being charged with grand larceny, embezzlement, and corporate fraud!"

Chloe stepped forward too, her eyes red and swollen from crying. "You ruined everything! Ethan was supposed to buy my condo! Now the police froze all our joint accounts!"

I stood perfectly still in the center of the marble foyer, flanked by Marcus Vance and two towering, armed Apex security guards.

"You came into my home to demand answers?" I asked, my voice ringing through the high-ceilinged space.

"This isn't your home!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking. "Ethan signed the papers! This house belongs to Vance Strategic Holdings!"

Marcus Vance stepped forward, pulling a blue legal document from his briefcase. "Actually, Mrs. Vance, as of three hours ago, Vance Strategic Holdings has been placed into emergency involuntary bankruptcy due to a seven-million-dollar default to Apex Development. All assets associated with the firm—including this penthouse—have been seized by the primary creditor."

"Who is the primary creditor?!" Chloe sobbed.

Marcus bowed slightly toward me. "Miss Emma Carter. Founder and majority shareholder of Apex."

Vanessa froze. Her eyes darted from Marcus to me, her jaw dropping in complete, utter disbelief. "You... you own Apex?"

"My father built this company, Vanessa," I said, taking two deliberate steps toward her. "The company you thought was a 'mechanic’s union payout'. The company whose wealth you tried to steal while hiding beneath my marriage vows."

Vanessa stumbled back, clutching her pearl necklace, her face turning as gray as the rain outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. "Emma... dear... please... we're family now—"

"Family?" I scoffed, a laughter devoid of all humor escaping my lips. "Did you treat me like family when you called my makeup cheap? Did you treat me like family when you planned to drive me into a psychiatric ward?"

"It was Ethan's idea!" Vanessa shrieked, instantly throwing her own son under the bus without a second thought. "He brought Chloe into this! I tried to stop him, Emma! I swear I tried to stop him!"

"You lying bitch!" Chloe screamed, turning on Vanessa and shoving her hard against the marble wall. "You were the one who told Ethan to get me pregnant so we could force him to hurry up the divorce!"

The two women erupted into a vicious, hair-pulling fistfight right there in my foyer, screaming insults, slapping each other, and destroying their expensive designer clothes in a desperate frenzy of mutual hatred.

I watched them for five cold seconds before waving my hand toward the security guards.

"Throw them out," I ordered flatly. "And notify the fraud squad that Chloe’s Lincoln Park condo was purchased with stolen Vanguard funds."
