Chapter 2 - The Mask of Innocence

They stayed in the room for another twenty minutes, drinking champagne from the bridal basket and laughing about how easy it had been to fool "poor, desperate Emma." When they finally stepped out into the hallway to rejoin the wedding guests downstairs, I dragged myself out from beneath the bed.
Lace torn, dust staining the hem of my white gown, I stood before the full-length mirror. The woman staring back at me wasn't the naive girl who had walked down the aisle three hours ago. Her eyes were hard as steel, her jaw set in a cold, unyielding line.
I took off my veil, folded it neatly, and placed it inside my leather overnight bag alongside my phone. Then I washed my face, reapplied my lipstick, and fixed my hair.
When I walked down into the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel, the applause was deafening.
Ethan hurried over, holding two glasses of crystal champagne, a warm, golden smile plastered across his handsome face. "There you are, my beautiful wife! I was looking everywhere for you."
"I was just taking a breath upstairs, darling," I said, putting on the sweetest, most innocent smile I could muster.
Vanessa appeared beside him, sliding her arm through his, her silver eyes gleaming with false warmth. "Oh, Emma, dear! You look positively glowing. Ethan was just telling me how excited he is to start managing your shared accounts tomorrow."
"Is he?" I looked directly into Vanessa's eyes, not flinching for a single second. "How thoughtful of him. A good husband always looks out for his family's assets."
Ethan kissed my cheek, his lips feeling like ice against my skin. "I just want to take care of you, Emma. You've worked so hard all your life. Now it's my turn to handle the heavy lifting."
"I appreciate that, Ethan," I murmured, taking a sip of the champagne. "In fact, I spoke with my family's estate lawyer this morning."
Ethan's hand twitched slightly on his glass. "Your lawyer? I thought your father didn't leave a formal will."
"Oh, just some old paperwork regarding my trust," I lied smoothly, watching his eyes widen by a fraction of a millimeter. "Nothing for you to worry about tonight. We have our entire lives ahead of us."
That night, back in the bridal suite, Ethan fell asleep almost immediately, exhausted from his performance. I sat by the window in the dark, watching the rain strike the glass, and placed a call to my father’s personal attorney and right-hand man, Marcus Vance.
"Emma?" Marcus picked up on the second ring, his voice sharp and alert despite the late hour. "Is everything alright? You just got married."
"Marcus," I said, my voice dead silent. "I need you to freeze every account associated with Apex Development’s subsidiary holdings tied to my legal alias. I also need full surveillance placed on Ethan Vance, his mother Vanessa, and a woman named Chloe."
There was a long pause on the line. "Emma... what happened?"
"They think they married a foolish girl with a hundred-thousand-dollar inheritance," I whispered, looking back at the man sleeping in my bed. "They're trying to steal my skyline estate and drive me into an asylum."

"Shall I have security handle them?" Marcus asked, his tone dropping into the cold, ruthless register that had built my father's empire.
"No," I replied, a dark smile touching my lips. "I want to break them myself."
