Chapter 4 - The Baiting of the Trap

The silence at the table was instantaneous and absolute.

Vanessa dropped her cloth napkin onto her plate. Chloe turned pale, her eyes darting frantically toward Ethan, who looked as if he had just been struck by lightning.

"Apex Development?" Ethan stammered, his fingers gripping the edge of the table. "Emma... what are you talking about? That money came from my personal investment portfolio and my mother’s family loan!"

"Oh, Ethan," I laughed, waving my hand dismissively. "You don't need to play modest with me anymore! The bank manager explained everything. He said the lead trustee of Apex Development personally approved the purchase as a gift for me."

"A gift?" Vanessa’s voice rose an octave, sharp and metallic. "Why would a multibillion-dollar real estate conglomerate give you a four-million-dollar penthouse?!"

I leaned forward, dropping my voice to a secretive whisper. "Because my father wasn't just a mechanic, Vanessa. He was the chief building consultant for Apex for thirty years. Before he passed away, the CEO guaranteed my family equity in their prime Chicago developments."

It was a brilliant half-truth—just enough to explain the money without revealing that I actually owned the entire company.

Ethan’s brain was visibly short-circuiting. I could see the greed battling with confusion in his dark eyes. He had married me thinking he was stealing a helpless girl's modest savings, only to realize he was sitting on top of an uncapped gold mine.

"So..." Chloe spoke up, her voice trembling slightly. "The house... it's legally tied to Apex?"

"Only until I sign the final acceptance affidavit next week," I said, watching her carefully. "If I sign it, the property becomes my sole personal asset, completely exempt from marital property division in the state of Illinois. But if I don't sign it... the title reverts to Ethan's designated holding firm."

Vanessa’s eyes lit up with sheer, unadulterated avarice. She reached across the table and grabbed Ethan's wrist, squeezing it so hard her knuckles turned white.

"Well!" Vanessa declared, a terrifying, predatory smile spreading across her face. "That is... wonderful news, Emma! Simply wonderful! You must be exhausted from all these complicated legal matters."

"I am," I sighed dramatically, resting my forehead on my hand. "In fact, I'm feeling so overwhelmed that I told the bank I might just let Ethan handle the entire title transfer while we're in St. Barts. I just don't have the stomach for corporate paperwork."

Ethan took a deep, shaky breath, leaning in close to me, his tone turning instantly hypnotic. "You don't have to worry about a thing, my sweet girl. Just give me the bank manager's contact info, and I'll make sure everything is taken care of while you rest."

"Oh, Ethan," I gazed into his eyes, pretending to be utterly dazzled by his chivalry. "What would I ever do without you?"

Behind his back, I caught Chloe making a subtle, triumphant sign toward Vanessa beneath the table. They believed their plot was back on track. They believed I had just handed them the keys to a four-million-dollar Apex estate on a silver platter.

They had no idea that every document Ethan was about to receive from "my bank manager" was being drafted by the top criminal litigation team in the United States.
