Chapter 7 - The Collapse

Ethan fell to his knees on the stone terrace, clutching his head in utter despair. He looked like a man who had stepped into a room expecting a golden throne, only to fall down an elevator shaft.
"Emma..." he turned his ghost-white face toward me, his voice barely a breath. "Emma... help me..."
I slowly removed my sunglasses, stood up from my lounger, and walked over to him. The naive, timid girl he thought he had married was completely gone, replaced by the commanding heir of Apex Development.
"Help you with what, Ethan?" I asked, my voice as cold as arctic ice.
"The... the bank... the house..." he babbled frantically, tears streaming down his face. "There’s been a terrible mistake! The Apex documents... they attached seven million dollars of debt to my holding firm! And Vanguard... someone turned over my personal financial ledgers to the auditors!"
"It wasn't a mistake, Ethan," I said softly, looking down at him.
He blinked, stunned. "What?"
"I sent your financial ledgers to Vanguard," I murmured, taking a slow step toward him. "And I drafted the Apex transfer documents myself."
Ethan stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "You... you did what? Why would you do that?! We're married! I love you!"
"You love my house," I corrected him flatly. "You love Chloe. And you love the idea of declaring me mentally unstable so you could steal my money."
Ethan went completely stiff. His eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing terror. "How... how do you know about Chloe?"
I pulled my phone from my robe pocket, tapped a file, and pressed play.
The voice of Vanessa filled the tropical air: "Ethan's still downstairs. That girl is probably in the bathroom washing off her cheap makeup... The house will belong to us soon enough."
Then Ethan’s own voice echoed from the speakers: "Emma doesn't know a thing about finance... Once I file the joint asset declaration, her name won't be worth the paper it's printed on... You, me, and our baby are going to live like royalty in that penthouse."
Ethan collapsed onto his side, weeping hysterically, clutching at the hem of my beach cover-up. "Emma! Please! I was foolish! My mother pressured me! Chloe manipulated me! I didn't want to hurt you! Please, you have millions! Save me from the auditors!"
I pulled my cover-up out of his filthy grip. "You picked the wrong bride, Ethan. My name isn't just Emma Carter. I am the sole owner and CEO of Apex Development."
The silence that followed was terrifying.
Ethan looked up at me as if I were a demon rising from the sea. The realization hit him like a physical blow: the helpless office administrator he had tried to ruin was actually the untouchable titan who held his entire life in her hands.
"Marcus Vance has already revoked your return ticket," I said, walking toward the villa doors. "The Chicago Police Department will be waiting for you at O'Hare Airport the moment you step off your budget flight."

"Emma! No! Please!" he screamed, crawling across the tiles after me. "Don't leave me!"
I stopped at the threshold, looking back over my shoulder one last time. "Goodbye, Ethan. Enjoy the jail cell."
