Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

One year later.
The sun was rising over the rolling green hills of the estate in upstate New York. The morning light filtered softly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the nursery, where two healthy, chubby one-year-old boys were babbling happily in their wooden cribs.
Leo was babbling loudly, standing up and holding onto the crib rail, while Alexander was contentedly chewing on a plush bear. Both boys had full heads of dark hair and bright, alert eyes—the picture of complete health and joy.
Sophia walked into the nursery wearing a soft cotton robe, holding two baby bottles. She smiled as she looked at her sons, remembering the fragile, tiny infants who had fought so hard in the NICU a year ago.
A pair of strong arms slid around her waist from behind, resting gently against her stomach. Julian leaned down, pressing a warm kiss against the curve of her neck.
"They're awake early," Julian murmured, his voice husky with sleep.
"They know it’s a big day," Sophia smiled, leaning back into his solid heat.
Today was the day the final papers were being signed to officially change the boys' last names from Vane to Vance—a symbol of the life Julian had built around them, shielding them from the ghost of their biological father, who was currently serving a five-year prison sentence.
Julian walked over to the cribs, effortlessly lifting both Leo and Alexander into his broad arms. The boys giggled wildly, grabbing at Julian’s hair and pulling his shirt collar. Watching the fierce, formidable titan of the financial world get completely dismantled by two toddlers brought a deep, radiant joy to Sophia’s heart.
Over the past year, Julian had never forced himself into her life or pushed her faster than she was ready to go. He had built a sanctuary for her, loved her children as if they were his own flesh and blood, and waited patiently for her heart to heal.
Sophia walked over to them, resting her hand on Julian’s shoulder, looking at the man who had rescued her from the cold marble floor and given her a reason to live.
"Thank you," she whispered softly.
Julian set the boys down on the padded play mat, then turned to pull Sophia into his arms. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet box, opening it to reveal a simple, stunning diamond ring that caught the morning light.
"I don't want to protect you from afar anymore, Sophia," Julian said, his eyes filled with an undeniable, fierce devotion. "I want to spend the rest of my life building a world where you and our boys never have to feel cold or alone again. Will you marry me?"
Sophia looked from the glittering ring to the face of the man who had proven his love not with words, but with blood, sacrifice, and absolute devotion.
May you like
She smiled, tears of pure happiness overflowing her eyes, and stepped into his embrace.
"Yes," Sophia whispered, pressing her lips to his. "A thousand times, yes."
