Chapter 7 - Awakenings

On the sixth day, the light in the ICU room began to change. The heavy sedative drip had been gradually reduced over the previous twenty-four hours, and the medical team was monitoring Sophia’s EEG closely.

Julian was sitting by her bedside, holding her hand, reading through a stack of documents concerning the legal custody battle he was preparing for her.

He felt a tiny, almost imperceptible twitch in her fingers.

Julian immediately set the papers aside and leaned over her. "Sophia?"

Her eyelids fluttered. A soft sigh escaped her lips, followed by a low, pained groan. Slowly, painfully, her long lashes parted, revealing cloudy, unfocused hazel eyes.

"Sophia, can you hear me?" Julian asked gently, his hand clasping hers warmly.

Her eyes wandered around the bright, unfamiliar room, taking in the IV poles, the heart monitor, and finally settling on the face hovering above her. It took a few moments for the haze to clear.

"Ju... lian?" her voice was a raspy, dry whisper.

"I’m here," he said softly. "You’re safe. You’re at St. Jude’s Hospital."

Panic suddenly flared in her eyes, her pulse spiking on the monitor. Her free hand moved weakly toward her abdomen, finding it flat and wrapped in surgical dressings.

"My... my babies..." tears instantly welled in her eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks. "Where... Marcus left... he left me..."

"Hush, look at me," Julian said urgently but gently, placing his hands on either side of her face to force her to focus on him. "Listen to my voice. The babies are alive, Sophia. They are alive."

Sophia froze, her breath hitching in her throat. "They... they survived?"

"You had two boys," Julian smiled, a warm, genuine smile that transformed his sharp, intimidating features completely. "They were born six weeks early, so they are in the NICU right now getting extra help to breathe. But they are alive, they are whole, and they are fighting."

A deep, sob wracked Sophia’s body—not of grief, but of profound, overwhelming relief. She pulled Julian’s hand to her face, pressing her lips against his fingers, weeping uncontrollably.

"Thank you," she sobbed. "Thank you... you came back..."

"I will always come back," Julian whispered, his heart swelling with a fierce, protective devotion that he could no longer deny. "I’m never going to let anyone hurt you again."
