Chapter 5 - The Coma Watch

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was a landscape of soft electronic beeps, humidified incubators, and tiny plastic tubes.
Julian stood outside the glass enclosure of Bay 4, looking at the two incubator tanks side by side. Inside each lay a tiny, frail human being, their skin translucent, their chests rising and falling to the rhythm of mechanical ventilators. They looked impossibly small, helpless against the vast machines surrounding them.
"They're remarkably strong for 34-weekers," a nurse said softly, stepping up beside him. "We’re calling them Baby A and Baby B for now until mom wakes up to name them."
Julian pressed his hand against the acrylic wall of the closest incubator. "They look like her," he whispered.
"They do," the nurse agreed gently. "You can go in and touch him if you scrub in."
Julian hesitated. For all his power, his immense wealth, and his commanding presence, he felt absurdly large and clumsy in this delicate world. He thoroughly washed his hands, put on a yellow gown, and reached his hand through the port-hole of the incubator.
Very gently, using only his index finger, he touched the palm of the tiny infant. Instantly, the baby’s minuscule fingers curled around Julian’s finger, gripping it with surprising, instinctual strength.
A tight ache blossomed in Julian’s chest. He looked down at the tiny baby, then over at the other twin struggling in the adjacent incubator.
"I've got you," Julian whispered to the infants, repeating the promise he had made to their mother. "Your father gave up on you, but I never will. I'll fight for all three of you."
Later that night, Julian moved to Sophia’s private room in the ICU. The room was dark, illuminated only by the heart monitor displaying a steady, slow green wave. Sophia lay motionless among the white sheets, a ventilator tube secured at her mouth, intravenous lines snaking into her arms.
Julian pulled a chair close to her bed and sat down. He took her cold hand, holding it gently between his own.
May you like
"You did it, Sophia," he said into the quiet room, his voice soft and tender. "You brought them into the world. Two boys. They are safe in the NICU right now, fighting just like their mother."
He closed his eyes, resting his forehead against her motionless hand. He didn't care about the board meetings scheduled for the morning, the million-dollar deals waiting for his signature, or the media circus that was sure to erupt when news of Marcus Vane's abandoned wife broke. He wasn't leaving this room until she opened her eyes.
