Chapter 8 - Rebuilding from Ash

Over the next two weeks, Sophia’s recovery moved forward in leaps and bounds, driven by her desperate desire to see her children.

When she was finally cleared to be wheeled down to the NICU, Julian was the one pushing her chair. He stood by her side as she put her arms into the gloves of the incubators, touching her tiny sons for the first time. She named them Leo and Alexander—names representing strength and protection.

While Sophia healed physically, Julian took care of the storm raging outside the hospital walls.

Marcus Vane’s life was unraveling with staggering speed. The exposure of his callous abandonment of his pregnant wife had sparked a massive public outcry. Advertisers pulled out from his tech firm, the board forced his resignation, and the DA formally indicted him on charges of reckless endangerment and criminal neglect. In a desperate attempt to salvage his remaining offshore wealth, Marcus filed for an aggressive divorce, demanding custody of the twins to avoid paying massive child support.

One afternoon, Julian sat with Sophia in her private recovery suite as she read through the court summons Marcus’s attorneys had delivered.

"He wants the boys," Sophia said, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the paper. "He called them a 'burden' while I was dying on the floor, and now he wants to take them from me just to ruin me."

Julian took the paper gently from her hands and laid it on the table. "He will never lay a hand on those children, Sophia. I’ve retained the top family law attorneys in the country. He has no moral, financial, or legal leg to stand on."

Sophia looked up at Julian, taking in the tired lines around his eyes. He had spent two weeks dividing his time between managing his financial empire and standing guard over her family. He had bought her a private estate outside the city with top-tier security so she wouldn't have to return to the penthouse she shared with Marcus.

"Why are you doing all of this, Julian?" she asked softly, her voice filled with wonder and confusion. "You were Marcus’s greatest enemy. You owed me nothing. Why did you save us?"

Julian walked over to the window, looking out over the city skyline before turning back to face her.

"I didn't do it to beat Marcus," Julian said honestly, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "Five years ago, before you married him, I saw you at the gallery gala in Chicago. You were full of warmth, life, and laughter. I was going to ask for an introduction... but Marcus stepped in first. He took something precious and spent five years trying to break it."

He took a step closer to her bed, his voice dropping to a low, intense hum. "I didn't save you to win a war, Sophia. I saved you because watching you die would have destroyed the only good thing left in this world."
