Chapter 4 - Miracles in the Shadow

The sharp, sudden sound of a infant’s cry cut through the muffled hum of the hospital corridor.

Julian snapped his head up. Seconds later, a second, faint cry followed the first. He stood up, his heart pounding harder than it ever had during a billion-dollar acquisition.

Twenty minutes later, the doors of the operating room opened, and Dr. Aris walked out, pulling down her surgical mask. She looked exhausted, her forehead beaded with sweat, but her eyes held relief.

"Are you the husband?" Dr. Aris asked.

"No," Julian said directly. "I’m the man who brought her in. How are they?"

Dr. Aris paused, evaluating Julian’s bloody appearance and his intense, unwavering gaze. "Sophia suffered a severe placental abruption brought on by eclampsia. If she had arrived five minutes later, we would have lost all three of them."

Julian swallowed hard, feeling a cold knot in his stomach loosen slightly. "And now?"

"We delivered twin boys," the doctor reported. "Baby A weighs four pounds, two ounces. Baby B is three pounds, eleven ounces. Because they are six weeks premature, their lungs are underdeveloped. They’ve been intubated and moved to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They are critical, but they are fighters."

"And Sophia?"

"She lost a massive amount of blood and suffered a series of micro-strokes from the pressure spike," Dr. Aris sighed. "We’ve stabilized her, but we had to place her in a medically induced coma to allow her brain and body to recover from the trauma. The next forty-eight hours are crucial."

Julian took a deep breath, absorbing every word. "I want the best care possible for all three of them. Anything the hospital needs, any specialist, bill it directly to my personal account."

"Sir, legally, we need permission from her next of kin for major medical decisions if she is incapacitated," Dr. Aris noted carefully. "Her husband—"

"Her husband left her on the floor to die," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping to a low, lethal murmur. "He surrendered his rights the moment he locked that door. I will have my legal team present the necessary court injunctions by morning. Until then, you answer to me."
