Chapter 4 - The South Wing

The morning light broke over the Manhattan skyline, pouring warm golden rays through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse.
By eight o'clock, the atmosphere inside the residence had completely shifted. Arthur Vance and his security team were gone, swept away into the dark lower levels of the federal courthouse downtown. In their place stood a sleek, highly professional team of female security officers hired personally by Alessandro’s private firm.
I stood in the center of the newly unlocked South Wing—a four-room suite that had sat vacant for over two years.
It was breathtaking. The master bedroom featured plush cream carpets, an king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton, and an adjoining nursery complete with hand-carved cribs, soft pastel murals of mountains, and a full-length balcony overlooking Central Park.
Two workers from a high-end juvenile boutique were busy unloading boxes of crib linens, organic baby formulas, clothes, and toys—all ordered by Alessandro’s personal assistant at six in the morning.
"Mrs. Vance... I mean, Ms. Elena," Raymond, the old doorman, said timidly as he stood near the doorway holding a silver tray loaded with fresh croissants and hot coffee. "Mr. Duca requested that breakfast be served in your private quarters."
I looked at Raymond, feeling an overwhelming wave of absurdity. Yesterday, Raymond was helping me sneak folded blankets into the service elevator. Today, he was standing in white gloves, serving me breakfast in a suite that cost more than my entire family had made in a decade.
"Raymond, please," I said, walking over to take the heavy tray from his hands. "You don't have to call me Ms. Elena. You helped me keep Mia safe. I'll never forget that."
Raymond’s eyes glistened with unshed tears. "I was terrified for you, my dear. Vance was a terrible man. He threatened to fire my son from the parking garage if I ever said a word about what went on in the east wing."
"He's gone now," I assured him softly. "Alessandro handled it."
"Mr. Duca is a hard man, Elena," Raymond warned gently, lowering his voice. "He is fair, yes, but he comes from a world of old blood and deep rivalries. Vance wasn't working alone. A man like Vance doesn't handle cartel assets without a powerful backer in the city. Be careful. Now that Mr. Duca has elevated you, people will start asking who you are."
His words settled like a cold stone in my stomach.
After Raymond left, I sat on the edge of the plush bed, watching Mia roll around happily on a soft velvet play mat, clutching a new stuffed lamb.
My life had transformed overnight. The crushing debt that had kept me awake at night, the paralyzing fear of eviction, the agonizing worry over formula money—all of it had been wiped away by a single stroke of Alessandro’s pen.
Yet, a new kind of fear was beginning to take root.
A knock sounded at the open suite door.
I turned to see Alessandro standing in the frame. He was dressed in a pristine charcoal three-piece suit, a fresh black tie knotted perfectly at his collar. He looked every bit the powerful, terrifying billionaire the media painted him to be, yet the sight of him no longer filled me with terror.
"Is the room to your satisfaction?" he asked, stepping inside.
"It’s... it's too much, Mr. Duca," I said honestly, standing up. "This suite is larger than my entire apartment. The clothes, the toys... you didn't have to do all this."
"I don't do anything by half-measures, Elena," Alessandro said smoothly, walking over to stand beside me. "If you are to manage my estate, you must reside where you can oversee operations seamlessly. And your daughter will not grow up sleeping behind towel racks in my home."
He looked down at Mia, who let out a happy gurgle and offered her stuffed lamb to him. A rare, genuine warmth flickered across Alessandro’s features as he reached down and patted Mia’s soft head.
"I have a meeting with the federal prosecutor at ten," Alessandro said, his tone shifting back to business. "The assets seized from Vance’s vault belong to a shell corporation controlled by Julian Croft."
My heart skipped a beat. Even a simple housekeeper knew that name. Julian Croft was a shipping magnate, a multi-billionaire, and Alessandro’s fiercest rival in the Atlantic logistics sector.
"Julian Croft was using Vance to smuggle high-value assets into my property so he could frame me for federal extortion if I won the port authority contract next month," Alessandro explained coldly. "Vance was his insider."
"Does Croft know Vance was caught?" I asked, a sudden wave of anxiety washing over me.
"He knows Vance stopped answering his phone at midnight," Alessandro replied, his eyes fixing on mine with fierce intensity. "And Croft’s men are currently looking into why a domestic cleaner was elevated to estate manager in the middle of the night."
I swallowed hard. "Am I in danger?"
Alessandro took a step closer, his tall frame looming over me. His presence felt suffocatingly protective, an unyielding wall between me and the cold world outside.
"Nobody touches what belongs in my home, Elena," Alessandro declared, his voice dropping into a low, possessive growl. "You and your daughter are under my protection now. If anyone approaches you—if anyone so much as looks at you the wrong way when you leave this building—you report it to me immediately. Do you understand?"
I nodded slowly, mesmerized by the sheer intensity in his dark eyes. "I understand, Alessandro."
It was the first time I had ever spoken his first name without adding Mr. Duca.

He noticed. His gaze dropped to my lips for a fraction of a second before returning to my eyes, a subtle tension sparking in the quiet air between us.
"Good," he whispered softly. "Get settled. Your new responsibilities begin tonight."
