Chapter 5 - The Gala of Knives

Three weeks passed in a blur of radical transformation.

My old life of panic and poverty was replaced by an intense, disciplined routine. As Private Estate Manager, I oversaw a staff of fourteen people, managing everything from the penthouse's private security protocols to the logistics of Alessandro’s personal travel schedules. I threw myself into the role with the same fierce dedication I had used to hide Mia, mastering software systems and financial ledgers within days.

Alessandro’s private architect had transformed a portion of the main floor into an exquisite, sunlit nursery for Mia, complete with a dedicated, vetted nanny who cared for her while I conducted my daily estate walk-throughs.

Yet, despite my new professional status, the line between employer and protector was beginning to blur in ways I hadn't anticipated.

"Hold still, Elena," the celebrity stylist murmured, adjusting the zipper of a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown.

I stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror in my suite dressing room. The dress hugged my curves flawlessly, cascading down to the floor in fluid silver-threaded waves. My dark hair was pinned up in an elegant vintage chignon, accented by diamond drop earrings that Alessandro had sent to my room an hour ago.

Tonight was the annual Manhattan Maritime Gala—the premier event where the city’s elite gathered before the Port Authority contract bids were officially announced.

"Mr. Duca requested that you accompany him as his primary estate delegate," the stylist added, applying a touch of deep crimson lipstick to my mouth. "He was very specific about the navy silk. He said it would match your eyes."

My stomach fluttered nervously. I wasn't just going as an employee; I was going as the woman who held the keys to his estate—a position that put me squarely in the sights of high society.

Ten minutes later, I walked into the grand foyer.

Alessandro was waiting by the private elevator, wearing a bespoke black tuxedo that made him look impossibly handsome. He turned as my heels clicked against the marble, his breath catching visibly in his throat.

His dark eyes swept down the length of my gown, lingering on my bare shoulders before rising to meet my gaze. For several seconds, the powerful titan of industry seemed completely speechlessly stunned.

"Elena," he said, his voice unusually husky. "You are... magnificent."

"Thank you, Alessandro," I whispered, feeling a hot flush rise up my neck. "I hope I look the part."

He stepped toward me, reaching out to gently adjust the velvet cloak draped over my arm. His fingers brushed against my bare skin, sending an electric shock straight down my spine.

"You don't need to 'look the part,'" he said softly, his dark gaze locking onto mine. "You own every room you walk into. Never forget that."

The private elevator whisked us down to the underground garage, where a armored black Maybach was waiting surrounded by four security vehicles.

The gala was held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel. Flashbulbs exploded like blinding lightning the moment our limousine pulled up to the red carpet. Reporters shrieked Alessandro’s name, their cameras tracking his every move as he stepped out of the vehicle and immediately extended a hand to guide me onto the carpet.

I placed my hand in his, feeling the immense, solid warmth of his palm. He didn't let go. He kept his hand firmly anchored at the small of my back, guiding me through the sea of press into the cavernous, crystal-lit ballroom.

The room was filled with hundreds of Manhattan’s most powerful figures, dressed in tuxedos and couture gowns. Whispers broke out instantly as we entered.

"Who is she?" "Is that his new manager?" "I heard she was the one who exposed Arthur Vance..." "Look at how he touches her..."

Alessandro paid no attention to the whispers. He maneuvered through the crowd with aristocratic grace, introducing me to foreign ambassadors, shipping tycoons, and federal judges as his trusted Estate Director.

Then, the crowd parted, and a cold, oppressive atmosphere swept over our corner of the ballroom.

A tall, thin man in his early sixties with cold blue eyes and a razor-thin mustache approached us, holding a glass of champagne. His presence was accompanied by four muscular men in dark suits.

Julian Croft.

"Alessandro," Croft greeted, his voice smooth and toxic, like honey laced with arsenic. "I was wondering if you would have the courage to show your face tonight after the... unpleasantness with your security staff."

Alessandro didn't flinch. He took a slow sip from his glass, his expression turning into an impenetrable mask of absolute ice.

"Julian," Alessandro replied calmly. "I hear federal marshals spent five hours executing search warrants on your Jersey docks this afternoon. I’m surprised you aren't at the precinct filing bail applications."

Croft’s eyes flared with pure hatred, but he kept his fake smile intact. His cold gaze shifted away from Alessandro, landing squarely on me.

"And who is this exquisite creature?" Croft asked, stepping closer, his eyes scanning my face with predatory malice. "Ah... yes. Elena Vance... no relation to poor Arthur, I assume? The little cleaner who climbed out of the laundry room straight into the billionaire's bed."

Gasps echoed from the nearby guests who were listening in.

I felt a sudden spike of anger, my posture straightening instantly. Before Alessandro could move, I took a half-step forward, looking Croft straight in his cold blue eyes.

"My name is Elena Vance, Mr. Croft," I said, my voice ringing out clear, crisp, and completely devoid of fear. "And unlike Arthur Vance, I don't take bribes from dying empires. If you wish to discuss estate operations or federal seizures, you may schedule an appointment with my office next Tuesday. Assuming you aren't in custody by then."

A dead silence fell over the surrounding circle.

Croft’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. He took a threatening step toward me, his hand clenching around his champagne flute.

In less than a second, Alessandro stepped directly between us. His large frame completely blocked Croft from my view. The air temperature in the room seemed to drop below freezing as Alessandro leaned down, his voice dropping into a whisper so terrifying that even the surrounding bodyguards took a step back.

"If you ever speak to her again," Alessandro growled, each word laced with lethal intent, "I will not wait for the federal courts to ruin you, Julian. I will tear down every dock, every ship, and every home you own until you have nowhere left to hide."

Croft swallowed hard, his arrogance crumbling under the sheer, unbridled threat of Alessandro’s fury. Without another word, Croft turned on his heel and hurried off into the crowd, flanked by his men.

Alessandro turned back to face me. The murderous rage in his eyes melted away instantly, replaced by a deep, fierce admiration that burned brighter than the crystal chandeliers above us.

"That," Alessandro whispered, taking my hand and lifting it to his lips, pressing a warm, lingering kiss against my knuckles, "was extraordinary."
