Chapter 9 - The Promise

Three months later.

The morning sun poured brightly through the windows of the grand penthouse, casting long golden rectangles across the pristine marble floors of the main living room.

There were no more hidden blankets. No more bottle warmers tucked behind towels in dark closets. No more secrets.

A large, custom-built wooden playpen sat in the center of the grand living room, filled with soft plush toys, books, and interactive learning stations.

Mia, now eleven months old, stood proudly on her own two feet at the edge of the playpen, holding onto the smooth oak rail, giggling as she tossed a small red ball across the floor.

I sat on the plush velvet sofa, dressed in an elegant cream silk blouse and tailored trousers, holding an iPad as I reviewed the upcoming monthly schedule for the estate staff. My face had healed completely, leaving no trace of the terrifying encounter from months ago.

The double doors of the master suite opened.

Alessandro walked out, wearing a crisp white shirt and dark trousers, carrying his suit jacket over his arm. He looked rested, powerful, and deeply at peace.

"Good morning, my loves," Alessandro said, a bright, genuine smile illuminating his face as he walked across the room.

He walked over to the playpen first, leaning down to scoop Mia into his arms. Mia let out a delighted shriek, wrapping her chubby arms around his neck and pressing a sticky, slobbery kiss directly onto his cheek.

"Look at you," Alessandro laughed softly, swinging her gently in the air before setting her onto his hip. "The real boss of Duca Enterprises."

He walked over to the sofa where I sat.

He didn't hesitate. He leaned down and pressed a long, tender kiss against my lips—a kiss that filled my chest with an immense, warm happiness that still felt like a beautiful dream every single morning.

"Did you sleep well?" I asked, smiling as I reached up to straighten his collar.

"Always, when you are beside me," he murmured, his dark eyes brimming with love.

He sat down beside me on the sofa, keeping Mia nestled safely between us. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box, laying it quietly on the coffee table.

My heart skipped a beat. I looked from the box up to his face.

"Alessandro... what is this?" I whispered.

"Open it," he encouraged gently.

My hands trembled slightly as I reached out and lifted the lid of the velvet box.

Inside sat a breathtaking, flawless six-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, set in platinum, sparkling brilliantly under the morning sunlight.

"Elena," Alessandro said softly, taking both of my hands into his, his gaze holding mine with fierce, unshakeable devotion. "One year ago, you walked into my home afraid, forced by cruel circumstances to hide the most precious thing in your life in a closet. You thought I was a monster who would destroy you."

Tears sprang to my eyes, hot and sweet, spilling over my lashes.

"Instead," Alessandro continued, his voice thick with emotion, "you showed me what true courage looks like. You saved my home, you saved my life, and you taught me how to love. I don't want you to just manage this estate, Elena. I want you to share it with me. I want to give Mia my name, my protection, and my heart for the rest of my days."

He took the ring from the box, looking deeply into my eyes.

"Elena Vance, will you marry me?"

Mia reached out with her tiny hand, patting the top of the velvet box, looking between us with big, bright eyes.

I didn't need to think. I didn't need to hesitate. The fear that had once ruled my existence had been completely burned away, replaced by a love so vast it filled every corner of my soul.

"Yes," I sobbed happily, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, Alessandro! A thousand times yes!"

Alessandro pulled me into a fierce, joyful embrace, slipping the ring onto my finger before capturing my lips in a passionate, triumphant kiss, while Mia giggled and pressed herself between us, wrapping her tiny arms around both of our necks.
