Chapter 7 - The Breach

The peace lasted for four days.

On Thursday afternoon, while Alessandro was attending a high-level executive meeting at the Port Authority headquarters downtown, I was in the estate management office reviewing the quarterly security audits.

Mia was in her nursery with Sarah, the primary nanny—a former pediatric nurse with top-tier security clearance.

The penthouse was quiet, save for the faint hum of the air filtration system and the distant rumble of Manhattan traffic fifty stories below.

Suddenly, the red emergency panel on my desk began to flash wildly, emitting a high-pitched, pulsing alarm.

SECURITY BREACH: PRIVATE ELEVATOR SHAFT B.

I stood up instantly, my blood running cold. Shaft B was the restricted service elevator—the very elevator Arthur Vance had used to transport his illicit cargo.

I grabbed my secure radio and clicked the channel. "Security, this is Elena. Report on Shaft B immediately."

Static crackled over the line, followed by a harsh, breathless voice: "Elena! Get to the South Wing! Someone bypassed the basement override—"

The line went dead with a loud, sickening burst of static.

"Mia!" I screamed.

I didn't wait for backup. I kicked off my high heels, grabbed the heavy brass paperweight from my desk, and sprinted down the long marble corridor toward the South Wing as fast as my feet could carry me.

The heavy mahogany doors of the South Wing were hanging half-open.

I threw the door wide and rushed inside.

Sarah, the nanny, was lying on the nursery carpet near the crib, unconscious, a small patch of blood pooling near her temple where she had been struck with a heavy object.

The crib was empty.

"No!" I shrieked, a primal, shattering sound that ripped from the deepest dark corners of my soul. "MIA!"

A tall, heavy-set man dressed in a black technician's jumpsuit emerged from the master bathroom, holding Mia tucked under his arm. Mia was crying frantically, her tiny face red, her little arms flailing in terror.

In his other hand, the man held a suppressed silenced pistol pointed straight at my chest.

"Don't move, lady," the man growled, his voice thick with a heavy Eastern European accent. "You make one sound, and I put a hole through your chest."

It was one of Julian Croft’s private mercenaries.

The terror that had threatened to consume me vanished instantly, replaced by a blinding, ferocious rage that burned hotter than sun fire. This was my daughter. The child I had hidden in closets, the child I had starved for, the child I had protected with every drop of my blood.

"Put her down," I said, my voice dropping into a deadly, unnatural calm as I tightened my grip on the heavy brass paperweight behind my back.

"Move back to the wall!" the mercenary barked, stepping toward the open balcony doors where a private utility rope harness was anchored to the metal railing. He was planning to abduct her down the exterior maintenance shaft.

"I said," I hissed, taking one deliberate step forward, "put... my... daughter... down."

"You crazy bitch—"

He raised the pistol toward my forehead.

I didn't hesitate. I didn't flinch. I lunged forward with all the speed and weight in my body, swinging the heavy brass paperweight with maximum force directly into the side of his wrist.

CRACK!

The gun flew from his grip, clattering across the hardwood floor. The mercenary let out a roar of pain, staggering back, but he didn't drop Mia. He grabbed her tighter, swinging his heavy left elbow straight toward my face.

The blow caught me across the cheek, sending me crashing hard onto the floorboards. Pain exploded behind my eyes, copper tasting sharp in my mouth.

Mia’s frantic screams echoed through the room.

"Elena!" a voice thundered from the hallway.

Alessandro burst through the nursery doors like a demon summoned from the depths of hell.

He didn't look at the room. He didn't look at the gun on the floor. His eyes locked onto the man holding Mia, and an expression of pure, monstrous fury distorted his features.

Before the mercenary could draw his backup knife, Alessandro crossed the room in two terrifying bounds. He grabbed the man by the throat with his bare left hand, slamming him violently against the concrete terrace frame with enough force to rattle the glass windows.

Alessandro’s right fist struck the man’s jaw with brutal, bone-shattering precision.

The mercenary went limp instantly, dropping Mia into the air.

Alessandro caught Mia with his left arm before she even touched the ground, pulling her securely against his chest, while using his right hand to throw the unconscious two-hundred-pound mercenary onto the terrace floor like a bag of wet garbage.

Four armed private security officers flooded the room seconds later, weapons drawn, securing the terrace and calling for medical staff.

Alessandro ignored them completely. He dropped to his knees on the nursery floor beside me, holding Mia tightly against his neck while reaching his free hand out to cup my bleeding cheek.

"Elena," he choked out, his voice shaking violently, his dark eyes filled with absolute panic as he examined my face. "Elena, look at me! Are you hurt? Talk to me!"

I sat up, coughing, and reached out with trembling arms. "Mia... give me Mia..."

Alessandro gently transferred our weeping daughter into my arms. I pulled Mia tight against my heart, burying my face in her soft hair, weeping hysterically as her little hands clutched my shirt.

May you like

Alessandro wrapped his massive arms around both of us, pulling us tightly into his chest, burying his face in my shoulder as his entire body trembled with the lingering adrenaline of near-catastrophe.

"She’s safe," Alessandro whispered over and over, his voice raw with tears. "You saved her, Elena. You saved our little girl. I've got you. I've got both of you."
