Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Six months later.
The private terrace of the Duca villa in Lake Como, Italy, was drenched in the warm golden light of the late afternoon sun.
Below the terrace, the deep blue waters of the lake shimmered like a sheet of diamonds, framed by snow-capped mountains and lush green hillsides. The air smelled of blooming jasmine, fresh sea salt, and aged wine.
Laughter and soft classical music drifted through the open French doors of the villa.
Inside, our close friends and family—including old Raymond, who had retired from doorman duties to become the head butler of our Como estate, and Lucia from the kitchen—were celebrating our intimate wedding ceremony held earlier that morning in the villa's private chapel.
I stood near the stone balustrade of the terrace, wearing a magnificent lace wedding gown that flowed around my feet like sea foam.
I looked down at my hand, where the platinum diamond ring now sat alongside a delicate gold wedding band, sparkling under the Italian sun.
"Thinking about the laundry room?" Alessandro’s warm voice whispered behind me.
I turned into his arms, wrapping my hands around his waist as he held me close against his chest. He looked impossibly handsome in his wedding tuxedo, his eyes filled with a quiet, profound contentment.
"I was," I admitted, smiling up at him. "I was thinking about the day you found her with your tie. I was so terrified my life was over."
"Your old life was over," Alessandro agreed softly, pressing a gentle kiss against my forehead. "The life where you had to fight the world alone. Now, we fight together."
From across the lawn, the sound of happy squeals echoed through the gardens.
Mia, now a toddler walking steadily on her own two feet, was running across the grass in a tiny white flower-girl dress, chasing a butterfly while Raymond walked close behind her, laughing happily.
"Look at her," I whispered, tears of pure joy pricking my eyes. "She’s so happy."
"She’s a Duca," Alessandro said proudly, his arm tightening around my waist as we watched our daughter play under the Italian sun. "She will never know fear again. She will never have to hide."
He turned me in his arms, looking down at me with the fierce, possessive, and endless love that had transformed our worlds.
"Thank you, Elena," Alessandro whispered, leaning down until his lips were brushed against mine. "For coming into my home. For bringing me your daughter. For saving me."

"I love you, Alessandro," I murmured against his mouth.
"I love you, my context," he swore softly, capturing my lips in a deep, timeless kiss as the sun set over the waters of Lake Como, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and forever.
