Chapter 3 - Secrets in the Shadows

Three days passed inside the Costa estate, each one feeling longer than the last. The mansion was a golden cage—luxurious, silent, and heavily guarded. Ethan was entirely distracted by the estate's high-speed tech lab and endless amenities, completely oblivious to the war quiet brewing outside these stone walls.
I, on the other hand, was losing my mind.
Every night, I laid awake in the massive canopy bed of my guest suite, staring at the painted ceiling, listening to the ocean waves crash against the cliffs below. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lorenzo's intense, pitch-black eyes and heard his words echoing in my head.
Your father didn't die.
It was a lie. It had to be. My father was a gentle, soft-spoken man who smelled of chalk and tobacco, who helped me with my science projects and kissed my forehead before bed. He couldn't be a criminal mastermind who worked for the mafia.
Unable to sleep, I wrapped a silk robe over my clothes and slipped out into the dimly lit hallway. The house was quiet, save for the faint hum of the security system. I walked aimlessly down the grand staircase, aiming for the glass-walled library to find something—anything—to distract my racing thoughts.
As I neared Lorenzo's private study, a soft sliver of light spilled out onto the polished marble floor. The door was slightly ajar.
"...we tracked the Vasquez girl to a safehouse in Boston," a rough voice was saying from inside. It was Mateo, Lorenzo's second-in-command. "She's terrified, Don Lorenzo. She claims she never meant to cross the family. She was paid five hundred thousand dollars by the Valenti Syndicate to pull those medical records."
"And where is the ledger?" Lorenzo's voice was low, smooth, and lethal.
"She doesn't have it. She says Arthur Hayes contacted her directly two months ago. He used her to monitor his health records without leaving a paper trail."
I gasped softly, my hand covering my mouth.
"Who's outside?" Lorenzo's voice sliced through the silence like a blade.
Before I could run, the door swung open violently. Mateo stood there, his hand resting on the holster beneath his jacket. When he saw me, his harsh expression softened slightly, but he did not move away.
"Miss Hayes," Lorenzo said from behind his desk. He was wearing a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing muscular forearms traced with dark tattoos. "Eavesdropping is a dangerous habit in this house."
"I wasn't eavesdropping," I lied, stepping into the room with my chin raised, trying to hide the trembling in my knees. "I heard you mention my father again. If he's alive, if Elena is in danger, you have to let me speak to her!"
Lorenzo gestured for Mateo to leave. The older man bowed and closed the door behind him, leaving us completely alone in the vast, shadowed office.
Lorenzo stood up and walked toward me, his movements fluid and predatory like a panther in the dark. "You don't command me in my own home, Aurora."
"He's my father!" I cried out, stepping closer to him despite the warning bells screaming in my head. "If he's alive, I have a right to know! You're keeping me locked up here like a prisoner while you play your violent political games!"
Lorenzo stopped inches away from me. He was so tall I had to tilt my head back to look into his eyes. The heat radiating off his body was palpable, intoxicating and terrifying all at once.
"If I wanted you as a prisoner, nurse, you would be in chains in the basement," he said softly, his voice dipping into a dangerous register. "You are here because the moment you step outside those gates, the Valentis will break your fingers one by one until you tell them where Arthur is."
"I don't know where he is!"
"I know you don't," Lorenzo said softly. His thumb reached out, lightly tracing the line of my lower lip. The contrast between his ruthless reputation and the delicate touch of his hand made my breath hitch in my throat. "Which makes you entirely useless to them dead, but extremely valuable to them alive as bait."
"And what am I to you?" I whispered, unable to look away from his gaze. "Just bait for your own traps?"
Lorenzo stepped even closer, his shadow completely enveloping me. His gaze dropped to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes. "You entered my car seeking shelter, Aurora. In my world, what enters my possession stays in my possession."
My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. It wasn't just fear making my pulse race—it was an undeniable, terrifying spark of attraction that had been simmering beneath the surface since the moment I looked into his eyes in that dark garage.
"You're a monster," I breathed, though my voice lacked conviction.
Lorenzo tilted his head slightly, a dark, dangerous spark flashing in his eyes. "Perhaps. But I am the only monster standing between you and the real dark."
Before I could respond, a sudden red light flashed on the desk console, accompanied by a sharp, rhythmic beep. Lorenzo's entire demeanor instantly shifted from smooth temptation to deadly focus. He reached over and pressed a button.
"Report," he commanded.

"Don Lorenzo," Mateo's voice crackled through the speaker. "Sensors at the perimeter gate just went down. We have incoming vehicles. Armed."
Lorenzo looked at me, his hand instantly wrapping firmly around my wrist. "It seems our guests have arrived earlier than expected."
