Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Truth

The morning light broke over the Tuscan hills, streaming through the sheer curtains of Lorenzo’s master suite. I lay wrapped in soft silk sheets, watching the rise and fall of Lorenzo's chest as he slept beside me.

The previous night had been a blur of fiery passion and confession. In his arms, I had surrendered every defense I had built up over the years. He wasn't just a ruthless mafia Don—he was a man burdened by immense responsibility, bound by duty, and fiercely protective of those he claimed as his own. And now, I was indisputably his.

Gently slipping out of bed so as not to wake him, I wrapped his discarded silk robe around myself and stepped quietly out onto the terrace.

The air was crisp and cool. I took a deep breath, trying to process how drastically my life had transformed in less than a week. I went from a exhausted pediatric nurse worrying about shift schedules to sleeping in the bed of Italy's most dangerous crime boss.

A faint buzz interrupted my thoughts.

Lorenzo’s secure satellite phone was sitting on the nightstand near the open door, its screen illuminated with an incoming encrypted message.

I hesitated. I knew touching his things was crossing a dangerous line. But the caller ID on the screen made my blood run cold.

INITIATE: PROJECT HAYES - RECOVERY PHASE 2

My hands trembled as I picked up the device. Swiping open the notification, a series of encrypted documents expanded on the high-tech screen.

It wasn't a dossier on how to execute my father.

It was a medical transfer order.

I scrolled down quickly, my eyes skimming through the pages of detailed medical reports, complex lab results, and legal documents. My heart began hammering violently against my ribs.

My father wasn't a mastermind who ran away with stolen millions to live a life of luxury.

Seven years ago, Arthur Hayes had discovered that the Costa family's previous Don—Lorenzo's late father—was using illegal chemical compounds in pharmaceutical distribution. When Arthur threatened to go to the federal authorities, he was captured and locked away in a private, underground medical facility. His "death" in the factory explosion had been staged by Lorenzo's father to cover up his imprisonment.

Arthur Hayes had been held as a forced lab researcher for seven years, dying slowly of advanced stage-four lung cancer.

And Lorenzo knew.

Lorenzo had known the entire time.

"What are you looking at, Aurora?"

I whipped around, dropping the phone onto the nightstand. Lorenzo stood in the doorway, his upper body bare, his dark eyes narrowed in immediate suspicion.

"You lied to me," I gasped, the words burning my throat like acid. Tears spilled down my cheeks as I stepped away from him. "You told me he was a thief! You told me he stole forty million dollars and ran away!"

Lorenzo’s expression hardened, a dark shadow passing over his face as he noticed the open phone. "Aurora, put the phone down."

"He was your father's prisoner!" I screamed, my voice echoing across the balcony. "My father was locked away in some dark basement for seven years while Ethan and I cried over an empty grave! And you... you knew!"

Lorenzo took a slow step toward me, his voice dangerously quiet. "I found out three months ago when I took over the family operations after my father died. I didn't order his imprisonment, Aurora."

"But you kept him there!" I sobbed, backing up until my spine hit the cold stone railings. "You let me believe he was a villain! You made me feel sorry for you while you kept my dying father in chains!"

"I kept him in a specialized medical unit to keep him alive!" Lorenzo roared, his composure finally snapping. "The moment my father died, the Valentis wanted Arthur executed to cover up their own involvement in the pharmaceutical ring! If I had released him publicly, they would have slaughtered him on the spot, along with you and Ethan!"

"I don't believe you!" I cried out, heartbreak tearing through my chest. "You're a liar! Everything you said to me last night... every touch, every word... it was all just a game to keep me controlled!"

Lorenzo stopped in his tracks, looking as if I had physically struck him across the face. A cold, unreadable mask closed over his features, hiding whatever emotion lay beneath.

"Believe what you want," he said, his voice dropping into a deadly, icy tone. "But as long as the Valentis are hunting your father's ledger, you stay here."

May you like

"I hate you," I whispered, wiping the tears from my eyes.

Lorenzo looked at me for one long, devastating moment before turning on his heel. "Mateo!" he barked into the hallway. "Double the guard on Miss Hayes' room. She is not to leave under any circumstances."
