Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

For two days, I was locked in my suite.

Guards stood outside my door around the clock. Meals were delivered on silver trays by silent staff members who refused to answer my questions. Ethan was kept in a separate wing of the villa, told that I was down with a sudden, contagious fever to prevent him from looking for me.

The betrayal burned deeper than any physical pain I had ever experienced. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt Lorenzo’s touch, his fierce kisses, his whispered promises—all tainted by the horrific realization that he was holding my dying father captive.

On the third night, the door to my room unlocked with a soft click.

I jumped up from the armchair, expecting Lorenzo. Instead, a young woman dressed in the house staff uniform slipped inside, her head covered by a dark scarf.

"Aurora," she whispered, pulling down the scarf.

My eyes widened in disbelief. "Elena?!"

"Shh! Keep your voice down!" Elena Vasquez rushed over, grabbing my hands. Her eyes were red, dark circles carved deep beneath her skin. "I don't have much time. The guards on this wing were just swapped for the night shift."

"How did you get in here? How are you alive?" I stammered, pulling her into a desperate hug.

"I managed to fake my credentials to get onto the villa's auxiliary nursing staff," Elena explained quickly, her hands shaking. "Aurora, I'm so sorry. I never meant to pull you into this nightmare. When I found your father's medical records at the hospital, I was trying to find a way to help him!"

"Is he really alive, Elena? Is he here?"

"He's being kept at a private medical clinic ten miles from here, under heavy guard," Elena said, her voice dropping to an urgent whisper. "Lorenzo Dante Costa is moving him tonight. Once he transfers your father to his island compound, you'll never see him again. Lorenzo will use him until he dies to secure his family's empire."

Tears filled my eyes again. "I have to see him, Elena. I have to get him out."

"I have a contact—a journalist who can get your father across the border to Switzerland for specialized treatment and federal protection," Elena urged, pulling a small electronic keycard from her pocket. "I disabled the service elevator in the east wing. Ethan is already waiting in a van near the lower olive grove. We can get you all out right now."

I hesitated for a split second. A part of my heart—foolish, bruised, and desperate—remembered Lorenzo’s eyes, his insistence that he was protecting us. But the facts were written in cold blood: my father was a prisoner, and Lorenzo was the Don who held the key.

"Okay," I whispered, setting my jaw. "Let's go."

We slipped out into the darkened corridor, moving like shadows through the service hallways of the massive villa. Elena led the way with practiced ease, bypassing the security cameras using a small jammer device.

My heart hammered against my ribs as we descended the narrow concrete stairs leading to the underground garages. Outside, the night air was cold and fresh.

A black delivery van sat idling near the edge of the olive grove, its headlights off.

"Ethan!" I cried softly, rushing toward the rear doors.

The doors swung open. Ethan was inside, looking panicked but unharmed. "Aurora! What is going on? This lady said we had to run—"

"Get in, quick!" Elena urged, pushing me into the back of the van.

Before I could pull the doors shut, a heavy hand grabbed the frame.

The van shook as a harsh light flooded the dark grove.

Five dark SUVs tore up the gravel road, surrounding the van in a tight perimeter. Dozens of armed guards stepped out, their laser sights painting red dots across the vehicle.

From the center SUV, Lorenzo stepped into the blinding light.

He didn't wear a coat despite the chill. His dark hair was windblown, his white shirt open at the collar, revealing the raw intensity of his fury. He looked like an enraged demon rising from the dark.

"Step out of the vehicle, Aurora," his voice boomed across the grove, so cold it seemed to freeze the night air instantly.

Elena gasped, backing away into the van. "Oh God... they tracked the jammer..."

I stood at the open van door, shielding Ethan behind me, looking down at Lorenzo. "Let us go, Lorenzo! It's over!"

Lorenzo walked slowly toward the van, completely ignoring the weapons pointed around him. His dark eyes were fixed solely on me, burning with an explosive mix of rage, pain, and dangerous authority.

"I warned you once, nurse," Lorenzo said, stopping right at the edge of the van. "You belong to my territory now. You don't walk away from me."

"I'm not your property!" I shouted, tears streaming down my face. "You lied to me!"

Before Lorenzo could respond, Elena pulled a small chrome pistol from her jacket, pointing it directly at Lorenzo’s chest. "Stay back! Or I swear to God I'll shoot!"

"Elena, no!" I screamed, reaching out to stop her.

Lorenzo didn't even blink at the gun pointed at his heart. "Foolish girl," he growled softly.

With terrifying, lightning-fast speed, Mateo stepped up from the shadow, striking Elena's wrist with a tactical baton. The gun fired wildly into the dirt before clattering to the ground. Elena shrieked as she was dragged out of the van and forced to her knees.

"Lorenzo, please! Don't hurt her!" I pleaded, scrambling out of the van, throwing myself between Lorenzo and my friend. "It was my idea! Blame me!"

Lorenzo caught me by the arms, pulling me up until I was inches from his chest. His grip was steel, unyielding and possessive.

"I am trying to keep you alive, you stubborn fool!" he hissed down at me, his breath hot against my cheek. "Do you have any idea who Elena's 'contact' is?!"

I blinked through my tears. "A... a journalist..."

Lorenzo grabbed Elena by her collar, forcing her to look up at me. "Tell her who paid you two hundred thousand dollars to stage this escape, Vasquez. Tell her!"

Elena sobbed violently, shaking her head. "I... I had no choice, Aurora... they threatened my family..."

"Who?!" Lorenzo roared.

"Marco Valenti!" Elena wailed. "The Valenti Syndicate! They said they would kill my parents if I didn't lure Aurora and the ledger out of the estate tonight!"

The world tilted beneath my feet. I stared at Elena in utter horror as the realization washed over me.

There was no rescue. There was no escape to Switzerland.

I had almost walked myself, my brother, and my father straight into the hands of the monsters who wanted us dead.

And Lorenzo had stopped it.
