Chapter 2 - The Missing Years

The silence in the small hospital room was heavy enough to crush bone. Daniel sat frozen in the plastic chair, his brain frantically trying to connect two reality-shattering concepts: his late brother was alive, and the woman he was set to marry in three months was tied to his brother’s disappearance.

"Start from the beginning, Maria," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly low, steady register. "Tell me everything."

Maria took a shallow, painful breath. "Eight years ago, before I came to work at your family estate, I worked at a private marina in Ventura. Andrew used to dock his yacht there. He was... different from you, Mr. Whitmore. He was reckless, wild, always running from debts he couldn't pay."

"I know what my brother was like," Daniel murmured. Andrew had been the charismatic favorite of their mother, but behind the charm lay a string of failed business ventures, secret gambling habits, and violent outbursts that their father had spent millions to cover up.

"We started seeing each other quietly," Maria continued, her eyes fixed on the ceiling. "It wasn't a romance that was meant to last. But then I got pregnant. When I told Andrew, he panicked. He said your father would disinherit him completely if he found out he had fathered a child with a working-class woman."

"My father was an elitist," Daniel admitted bitterly. "He would have cut him off without a second thought."

"Andrew told me to stay quiet, promising he would set up a trust fund for the baby," Maria said. "Then, six months into my pregnancy, Andrew introduced me to a woman he called his financial advisor. A woman who was handling his offshore accounts."

"Vanessa," Daniel said, the realization hitting him like cold water.

"Yes. Vanessa Hart," Maria spat the name like poison. "Back then, she wasn't wearing designer dresses or living in Beverly Hills. She was an independent wealth manager working out of a small office in Century City. She and Andrew were involved in something illegal—some kind of siphon operation taking funds directly out of Whitmore Holdings' regional construction accounts."

Daniel’s hands clenched into tight fists. "They were embezzling."

"Andrew realized your father's internal auditors were getting close," Maria explained, her voice cracking with fatigue. "He knew he was going to prison. So he and Vanessa planned his death. Vanessa helped him move four million dollars into a shell company in the Cayman Islands. Then came the night on the boat off Santa Barbara. He set the fuel lines on fire, jumped onto a motorized raft, and vanished into Mexico."

"And the body?" Daniel asked. "The Coast Guard found dental fragments..."

"Belonging to a homeless man Andrew hired to clear the deck that afternoon," Maria said, a shudder running through her frame. "Andrew let him die in the explosion to ensure the police would close the case."

Daniel felt a sickening wave of nausea rise in his throat. His younger brother—the boy he had shared a bedroom with growing up—was a murderer.

"Why didn't you go to the police?" Daniel demanded. "Why did you come to work at my house three years ago?"

"Because Andrew abandoned us!" Maria cried softly, tears spilling over her dark lashes. "He took the money and went into hiding in South America. He never sent a single dollar for Noah. I was working three jobs just to buy diapers and pay rent. Then, three years ago, I saw your father had died and you were taking over Whitmore Holdings. I applied for the housekeeping job under my mother's maiden name just to be near the family... to see if I could find proof of Andrew's offshore accounts to secure Noah's future."

"And then Vanessa showed up in my life," Daniel said, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place with terrifying precision.

"Two years ago, Vanessa walked into your house as your new corporate consultant," Maria whispered. "I nearly fainted when I saw her. She recognized me immediately, but she cornered me in the pantry and threatened me. She said if I ever spoke a word about Andrew, or about the money, she would have Child Protective Services take Noah away from me and have me framed for theft."

"She was using me," Daniel said, staring blankly at the wall. "She targeted me from the start."

"She didn't just want the four million, Mr. Whitmore," Maria said, leaning forward despite the pain in her ribs. "Andrew is back. He returned to California six months ago under a false passport. He and Vanessa are planning to take complete control of Whitmore Holdings through your upcoming public merger."
