Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Past

At 4:15 a.m., Daniel walked out of the hospital entrance into the damp, cool night air of West Hollywood. His silk robe was stained with Maria's blood, his hair disheveled, but his mind had never been clearer.

He pulled his phone from his coat pocket. There were now fifteen missed calls from Vanessa, four from his security team, and a text from his chief legal officer, Arthur Vance, asking if they needed to execute a non-disclosure agreement with the hospital staff.

Daniel dialed Arthur’s direct line. The veteran lawyer answered on the second ring, his voice raspy with sleep.

"Daniel? Is everything alright? Vanessa told me the housekeeper had a psychotic episode at the estate."

"Arthur," Daniel said, stepping into the driveway where a yellow taxi was idling. "I need you to meet me at my private office in downtown Los Angeles in thirty minutes. Bring the original trust files from six years ago—specifically the accounts tied to Andrew's estate."

A long pause sat on the line. "Andrew’s files? Daniel, those accounts were settled when your mother passed away..."

"Bring them, Arthur. And tell no one. Not my security detail, not the board, and especially not Vanessa."

Daniel hung up, climbed into the back of the taxi, and gave the driver the address for the Whitmore Holdings tower. As the yellow cab navigated the empty, amber-lit freeways of Los Angeles, Daniel stared out the window, his mind racing through every memory of the past two years.

He recalled how effortlessly Vanessa had entered his life. She had been hired as an external risk analyst during a complex land acquisition in San Diego. She was brilliant, breathtakingly beautiful, and possessed an uncanny understanding of his family's corporate structure. Within six months, she was managing his personal schedule. Within a year, she was living in his Beverly Hills mansion.

She wasn't just a consultant, Daniel realized, his jaw tightening until his teeth ached. She was a operative executing a long-term hit on my life.

Thirty minutes later, Daniel stepped off the private elevator onto the top floor of the Whitmore Holdings skyscraper. The floor was dark, the empty cubicles looking like silent monuments in the moonlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Arthur Vance was already waiting inside Daniel’s corner office. The seventy-year-old attorney sat behind the desk, a thick leather accordion folder open before him, his face pale under the soft glow of a desk lamp.

"Daniel," Arthur said, standing up. "What is going on? Look at your clothes—is that blood?"

"It’s Maria’s blood," Daniel said, closing the heavy oak door behind him and locking it. "Arthur, I’m going to ask you a question, and I need you to answer me as my father's friend, not as the company lawyer."

Arthur frowned, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "Of course."

"When Andrew’s boat exploded six years ago, who handled the forensic audit on his personal offshore accounts?"

Arthur swallowed hard, his fingers nervously tapping against the leather folder. "Vanessa Hart's firm was brought in by Andrew himself three months before the accident. She presented the final financial report to your father showing that Andrew was two million dollars in debt to various international private lenders."

"Did you personally verify those bank statements?" Daniel demanded, stepping closer to the desk.

"No," Arthur admitted, looking down at his hands. "Your father was devastated, Daniel. He just wanted it over. Vanessa handled the liquidations. She was very thorough... she even managed to recover a few hundred thousand dollars for your mother's care."

"She didn't recover it, Arthur," Daniel said, slamming his hand flat onto the glass desk. "She stole it. She and Andrew embezzled four million dollars, faked his death, and left a man to burn on that yacht."

Arthur gasped, his face losing all color. "Daniel... that's impossible. The police report—"

"The police report was bought!" Daniel spat. "Andrew is alive. He’s back in Los Angeles, and Vanessa is positioning herself to seize control of the company during the Sterling Group merger on Friday!"

Before Arthur could process the revelation, Daniel’s phone chimed with an incoming security alert from his estate's smart-home network.

He pulled out his phone and unlocked the screen. The live security feed from the Beverly Hills estate displayed the master bedroom. Vanessa was standing near his private safe behind the oil painting, her fingers rapidly typing in numbers on the digital keypad.
