Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at Van Nuys

An hour later, Daniel stood inside a private holding room at the Van Nuys Executive Airport terminal. Rain was beginning to fall over the tarmac, blurring the silhouettes of the luxury private jets parked outside.
Vanessa Hart sat at a stainless-steel table in the center of the room, her hands handcuffed to a metal ring anchored to the tabletop. She was still wearing her black evening gown, though it was now wrinkled and stained. Her hair had fallen out of its perfect updo, but her dark eyes remained sharp, cold, and defiant.
Daniel walked into the room, stepping up to the opposite side of the table. He tossed the thick leather binder containing his family's master stock certificates onto the metal surface with a heavy thud.
"You almost pulled it off," Daniel said softly, sitting down in the metal chair across from her.
Vanessa let out a small, bitter laugh. "Almost doesn't mean anything in business, Daniel. You got lucky."
"Lucky?" Daniel echoed, leaning back. "My housekeeper survived a fractured skull and told me the truth. My brother was too arrogant to realize I would call a private security firm instead of playing corporate games. That isn't luck, Vanessa. That’s the consequence of your own cruelty."
Vanessa stared at him, her lips curling into a cold sneer. "You were so easy to manipulate, Daniel. Two years of playing the sweet, supportive fiancée. Listening to you complain about your father's legacy, holding your hand at charity galas... it was exhausting. You were so desperate for someone to love you that you never bothered to check my background."
"I trusted you," Daniel admitted, feeling a lingering sting of betrayal deep in his chest. "I loved you."
"You loved an image," Vanessa spat, leaning forward as far as her handcuffs would allow. "I built that image specifically for you. Andrew and I spent three years setting up that scheme. We were going to liquidate Whitmore Holdings, take the three hundred million from the Sterling merger, and vanish to Europe. You would have been left holding the debt, bankrupt and humiliated."
"Instead, you’re going to spend the next thirty years in a federal penitentiary," Daniel said, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "The Justice Department has opened a full indictment against you for grand larceny, corporate fraud, attempted murder, and conspiracy."
Vanessa’s posture faltered slightly, a flicker of genuine fear crossing her eyes before she masked it with anger. "Andrew will take the fall. He’s the one who set the fire on the boat."
"Andrew already gave a full confession to the federal prosecutors fifteen minutes ago," Daniel lied smoothly, watching her face carefully. "He blamed the entire plot on you. He said you coerced him into fake his death."
Vanessa’s jaw dropped in disbelief. "That pathetic coward! I saved his life! I hid him in South America for five years!"
"And now he’s trading your freedom for a reduced sentence," Daniel said, pushing himself up from the chair. "You built a partnership on greed and betrayal, Vanessa. You shouldn't be surprised when it collapses on top of you."
He turned and walked toward the heavy door of the holding room.

"Daniel, wait!" Vanessa called out, her voice dropping the arrogant edge, turning frantic as the reality of her fate set in. "Daniel, please! Look at me! We can work something out... I know where the rest of the offshore accounts are hidden!"
Daniel didn't stop. He stepped through the doorway, letting the heavy steel door slam shut behind him, cutting off her voice forever.
