Chapter 5 - East Los Angeles

The taxi pulled up to the curb of a quiet, tree-lined street in East Los Angeles just as the first grey light of dawn began to break over the horizon. The neighborhood was modest—small single-story stucco homes with chain-link fences, neatly kept lawns, and worn pickup trucks parked in the driveways.

Daniel stepped out of the cab, his heart heavy. He walked up the concrete path of a small yellow house with bright blue window shutters—the address Maria had given him.

Before he could reach the front porch, the front door creaked open. An elderly woman wearing a thick knitted shawl stepped out, holding a broom like a weapon.

"Who are you?" she demanded in accented English, her dark eyes narrowing at Daniel's blood-stained coat and disheveled appearance. "This is private property!"

"Mrs. Reyes?" Daniel asked, stopping at the bottom of the porch steps. "My name is Daniel Whitmore. I’m... I’m Maria’s employer."

The woman’s posture softened slightly, but her eyes remained guarded. "Maria is in the hospital. She called me from the ambulance. She told me not to open this door for anyone except her."

"She sent me, Mrs. Reyes," Daniel said softly, pulling out his phone and placing a video call to the hospital room.

After three rings, Maria’s face appeared on the screen, pale and bandaged. "Mrs. Reyes?" Maria’s voice came through the speaker. "It’s okay. That is Daniel. He is Andrew’s brother. He’s here to protect Noah."

Mrs. Reyes looked from the screen to Daniel's face. Slowly, she lowered the broom and stepped aside. "Come inside. Quickly."

Daniel stepped into the small, warm living room. The house smelled of cinnamon and fresh coffee. Sitting at a small wooden dining table in the corner was a young boy.

Daniel stopped in his tracks, the breath catching in his throat.

The boy had thick, wavy dark hair, pale blue eyes, and a small dimple on his left cheek—the exact mirror image of Andrew at seven years old. He was wearing a faded navy blue t-shirt and was carefully assembling a plastic airplane model.

Noah looked up from his toy, his bright blue eyes fixing on Daniel. "Are you the man from the big house?" he asked, his voice soft and curious.

Daniel slowly walked over to the table and sank onto one knee, bringing himself to the boy's eye level. Up close, the resemblance was overwhelming. It was like staring back twenty-five years into his own childhood.

"I am," Daniel said, forcing his voice to remain steady despite the knot forming in his throat. "My name is Daniel. I’m... I’m your uncle."

Noah tilted his head, looking at him thoughtfully. "My mom said I didn't have an uncle."

"Your mom was trying to keep you safe," Daniel said gently. "But I’m here now. And no one is ever going to scare you or your mother again."

Suddenly, the quiet morning air was shattered by the screech of heavy tires outside on the street.

Mrs. Reyes rushed to the front window, pulling back the lace curtain. "A black SUV just pulled up across the driveway!" she gasped. "Two men are getting out!"

Daniel stood up instantly, pulling Noah behind his back. Through the window, he saw a sleek, black Range Rover blocking the driveway. The driver’s side door opened, and a man stepped out into the morning light.

He wore a tailored grey suit, dark sunglasses, and had a thick beard, but the posture, the broad shoulders, and the arrogant tilt of the chin were unmistakable.

It was Andrew.
