Chapter 2 - The Interrogation at Callaway Tower

Victoria’s sharp, shrill screams echoed through the grand marble lobby of Callaway Tower as two burly security guards escorted her into a private executive holding room on the eightieth floor.

“Get your hands off me! Do you have any idea who I am?!” she shrieked, kicking her heels against the polished floor. “I am Victoria Sterling-Callaway! I am the wife of the CEO! You will all be fired and ruined for this!”

Inside the soundproof holding room, Nathaniel stood behind a massive oak conference table. His wedding jacket was discarded, his shirt sleeves rolled up, revealing the veins bulging on his forearms. Beside him stood Chief Inspector Marcus Reyes of the City Homicide Division, along with three plainclothes detectives.

Eleanor had already been rushed to St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital under a heavy armed escort, treated for acute shock and minor bruising.

The door burst open as security escorted Rose into the room.

Rose looked tiny and fragile in her stained, torn catering uniform. Her hands were wrapped in clean white gauze bandages provided by the building’s emergency medical team. She looked nervous, clutching her hands to her chest.

Nathaniel immediately looked up. The cold rage in his eyes softened for a brief fraction of a second as he looked at the young woman who had risked her life to save his mother.

“Miss... Rose, correct?” Nathaniel asked softly, stepping around the table.

“Yes, sir. Rose Lin,” she whispered, keeping her eyes down.

“Sit down, please,” Nathaniel said, pulling out an leather executive chair for her.

Before Rose could sit, Victoria whirled around from where she was seated across the room, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.

“She’s a nobody!” Victoria hissed, her voice dripping with malice. “She’s a temp catering worker! A pathetic, low-class maid! You’re taking the word of a servant over your own wife, Nathaniel?!”

Inspector Reyes stepped between Victoria and Rose, tapping his tablet screen.

“Mrs. Callaway, quiet down,” Reyes commanded firmly. “Miss Lin is our primary eyewitness.”

Reyes turned to Rose, his tone gentle. “Miss Lin, tell us exactly what you saw before you dropped your tray.”

Rose took a deep, steadying breath. Her hands trembled slightly under the bandages, but her voice was clear and unwavering.

“I was walking toward Table Four with champagne,” Rose began, looking directly at the inspector. “Mrs. Eleanor Callaway was standing near the glass edge, looking at the city lights. Mrs. Victoria walked up behind her.”

“She was talking to me about the floral arrangements!” Victoria interrupted loudly.

“Silence!” Reyes barked.

“Go on, Miss Lin,” Reyes said.

“They were arguing,” Rose said quietly. “I couldn't hear the words over the music, but their faces were tense. Mrs. Eleanor turned her back to walk away. Then... Mrs. Victoria stepped forward, brought both hands up, and shoved Mrs. Eleanor’s shoulder frame with full force.”

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room.

Nathaniel closed his eyes, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white.

“You lying little bitch!” Victoria screamed, lunging forward across the conference table, her diamond necklace flashing under the bright lights. Security guards immediately grabbed her arms, pinning her back into her chair. “She’s lying! She’s trying to extort money from the Callaway family! She’s making it up!”

Inspector Reyes pulled a flash drive from his pocket and plugged it into the large wall monitor in the room.

“We don't need to rely solely on witness testimony, Mrs. Callaway,” Reyes said coldly. “Callaway Tower’s rooftop is equipped with forty-four high-definition security cameras.”

The wall screen flickered to life.

A high-angle, crystal-clear 4K video played on the screen. It captured the exact moment from thirty minutes ago.

The camera clearly showed Eleanor turning her back on Victoria. It showed Victoria’s face twisting into a mask of rage. It showed Victoria extending both arms with undeniable, deliberate force, slamming her hands into the elderly woman’s upper back, launching her over the low glass perimeter.

And then, it showed Rose dropping her silver tray, sprinting across the terrace like a thunderbolt, and throwing herself over the edge to catch the falling woman.

Victoria watched the screen in dead, silent horror. The blood drained from her face completely.

“That... that’s not what happened...” Victoria whispered, her voice finally breaking, her confident socialite facade collapsing into dust. “The camera angle... it makes it look...”

Inspector Reyes pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

“Victoria Sterling,” Reyes read from a laminated card, stepping toward her. “You are under arrest for attempted premeditated murder. You have the right to remain silent...”

As the metallic click of the handcuffs echoed through the room, Victoria looked at Nathaniel, tears streaming down her makeup-streaked cheeks.

“Nathaniel, please! I love you! She was going to ruin us! She was going to change your father’s will! She was going to take everything from you!” Victoria sobbed frantically as the officers dragged her toward the door.

Nathaniel didn't say a word. He didn't even look at her as she was pulled into the hallway, her shrieks fading down the corridor.

He turned toward Rose.

The billionaire bowed his head deeply to the young catering maid.

“Miss Lin,” Nathaniel said, his voice thick with emotion. “You saved my mother’s life tonight. Name anything you want in this world—money, a house, protection—it is yours.”

Rose looked at him, shaking her head gently.

“I don't want money, Mr. Callaway,” Rose said softly. “I just want to know why she tried to kill your mother.”

May you like

Nathaniel looked at the floor, a dark, heavy shadow passing over his eyes.

“Because,” Nathaniel whispered, “Victoria didn't marry me for love. And my mother was thirty minutes away from exposing the truth.”
