Chapter 6 - The Trap at Pier 44

The wind at Pier 44 blew bitter and cold, carrying the smell of salt water and diesel fuel.

A luxury black yacht idled at the edge of the dock, its engines humming softly in the dark fog. Sitting in the back seat of a tinted Mercedes sedan parked near the water was Victoria Sterling.

She had discarded her white wedding gown, now wearing a dark leather coat and black sunglasses despite the night air. Her face was pale, drawn, and frantic. Beside her sat her mother, Evelyn, holding two leather duffel bags packed with stacked foreign currency and forged passports.

“Is the captain ready?!” Victoria shrieked frantically, checking her watch every three seconds. “We need to leave NOW! The moment Nathaniel realizes I’m out on bail, he’ll use his federal connections to lock down the waters!”

“Calm down, Victoria!” Evelyn snapped, unzipping one of the bags. “The captain has been paid half a million dollars. He will take us to international waters within forty minutes. Your father is already waiting for us in South America.”

Suddenly, bright, blinding halogen headlights flashed out from the darkness of the industrial docks.

Four heavy, black armored SUVs roared down the pier, blocking the exit road in a tight semi-circle, trapping the Mercedes completely.

“What the hell?!” the driver yelled, reaching for a weapon in his jacket.

Before the driver could unholster his gun, the doors of the armored vehicles burst open.

A dozen heavy tactical security officers armed with high-powered rifles flooded the pier, surrounding the Mercedes with military precision.

“DRIVER! STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE WITH YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!” a voice boomed through a megaphone.

Victoria screamed in terror, scrambling into the floorboards of the back seat. “Mom! It’s the police!”

“It’s not the police,” Evelyn whispered, her face going stark white as she looked through the tinted window.

Stepping out from the center SUV was Nathaniel Callaway.

Beside him stepped Rose Lin.

Nathaniel walked slowly toward the Mercedes, his tall figure imposing against the fog, his hands casually in his coat pockets.

The driver of the Mercedes slowly opened his door and stepped out, throwing his gun onto the wet asphalt and putting his hands in the air.

Nathaniel stepped up to the rear passenger window, tapping his heavy platinum ring against the glass.

“Open the door, Evelyn,” Nathaniel said calmly.

Evelyn, her hands trembling, pushed the car door open and stepped out onto the wet pier, trying desperately to maintain her regal, arrogant posture.

“Nathaniel!” Evelyn hissed, glaring at him. “This is illegal restraint! I posted legal bail for my daughter! You have no authority to intercept us!”

“Bail was granted based on your family’s asset guarantees,” Nathaniel said smoothly, pulling a white document from his coat. “Unfortunately for you, thirty minutes ago, the Federal Reserve froze all of Sterling International’s bank accounts worldwide.”

Evelyn gasped, stepping back. “What?!”

“Your bail bond has been revoked,” Nathaniel continued cold-heartedly. “You’re no longer on a private pier, Evelyn. You’re at a federal crime scene.”

Nathaniel stepped aside, allowing Rose to step forward into the bright light of the headlights.

Victoria slowly crawled out of the back seat of the car, her hair wild, her eyes bloodshot, staring at Rose with pure, unadulterated hatred.

“You...” Victoria spat, her voice raspy. “You ruined everything, you little rat!”

Rose looked at the disgraced heiress, feeling no fear, no intimidation—only cold, absolute disgust.

“You tried to kill an innocent mother for money,” Rose said, her voice clear and strong against the ocean wind. “And thirty years ago, your father destroyed my mother’s life for the exact same reason.”

Victoria blinked, stunned. “What... what are you talking about?!”

“Your family’s legacy of theft and violence is over, Victoria,” Rose declared.

In the distance, the loud, wailing sirens of dozens of police cruisers echoed across the harbor. Blue and red lights flashed against the foggy sky as a fleet of police cars rounded the corner of the pier, blocking every possible escape route.

Inspector Reyes stepped out of the lead police cruiser, accompanied by federal agents from the Department of Justice.

“Evelyn Sterling! Victoria Sterling!” Reyes shouted, drawing his firearm. “On the ground! NOW!”

Evelyn dropped her leather bags, her knees giving out, collapsing onto the cold, wet asphalt in total defeat.

Victoria stood frozen for a second, looking at the ocean, looking at the police, and finally looking at Nathaniel and Rose standing side-by-side.

With a desperate, hysterical sob, Victoria fell to her knees, screaming into the cold night air as the federal officers swarmed over them, clicking heavy iron handcuffs around their wrists once and for all.
