Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s Downfall

The news of the midnight sting operation at Pier 44 rocked the nation’s political and financial circles.

Within seventy-two hours, the entire criminal network of the Sterling family was thoroughly dismantled by federal prosecutors.

Julian Sterling, Victoria’s father, was apprehended by Interpol authorities at an airport in Buenos Aires while attempting to board a charter flight under a fake passport. He was extradited back to the United States in heavy leg irons.

The investigation revealed a massive, decades-long paper trail of corporate espionage, tax evasion, fraud, and attempted murder.

Three weeks after the wedding incident, the grand high court of the city convened for the formal bail and indictment hearing of Julian, Evelyn, and Victoria Sterling.

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, news anchors, high-society figures, and legal experts.

Sitting in the front row of the executive gallery was Nathaniel Callaway, wearing a crisp charcoal suit, with his mother Eleanor sitting comfortably beside him.

Beside Nathaniel sat Rose, wearing a tailored navy dress provided by Eleanor, her posture poised and confident.

Standing at the defense table, wearing orange correctional jumpsuits and wrist shackles, were Julian, Evelyn, and Victoria Sterling. They looked broken, hollow, and utterly stripped of their former wealth and influence.

The presiding federal judge, Honorable Judge Arthur Vance, slammed his heavy wooden gavel down, bringing the noisy courtroom to absolute silence.

“In the matter of the United States versus Julian Sterling, Evelyn Sterling, and Victoria Sterling-Callaway,” Judge Vance announced, his stern voice echoing off the high mahogany walls. “Court is now in session.”

The lead federal prosecutor stood up, holding a heavy tablet.

“Your Honor,” the prosecutor said loudly. “The government presents undeniable video evidence, forensic financial audits, and direct eyewitness testimony regarding the attempted murder of Eleanor Callaway and the grand financial fraud of Sterling International.”

The prosecutor turned, looking directly at the defense table.

“Furthermore,” the prosecutor continued, “we submit into the official court record the newly uncovered archival evidence from thirty years ago—proving that Julian Sterling systematically framed Clara Lin to cover up his family’s initial corporate crimes.”

Hearing her mother’s name spoken with honor in a federal courtroom, tears of quiet pride rose to Rose’s eyes. Nathaniel gently reached over under the wooden railing, taking Rose’s hand and giving it a warm, supportive squeeze.

Judge Vance looked over his glasses at the three defendants.

“Do the defendants have any statement before bail is permanently denied?” Judge Vance asked coldly.

Julian Sterling stood up slowly, his voice shaking. “Your Honor... we request mercy. Our family has served this city for decades—”

“Mercy?” Judge Vance interrupted sharply, slamming his gavel down with thunderous force. “You stole hundreds of millions of dollars, framed innocent citizens, and your daughter attempted to throw a seventy-year-old woman off an eighty-two-story building!”

The judge glared at Victoria, who flinched and pulled her chains close to her chest.

“Bail is denied for all three defendants,” Judge Vance declared forcefully. “You will remain in maximum-security federal custody until your criminal trial begins. Court adjourned!”

The courtroom erupted into loud cheers and flashbulbs.

As federal marshals escorted the Sterling family toward the holding doors, Victoria turned her head, catching a glimpse of Nathaniel leaning close to Rose, whispering something into her ear that made her smile softly.

Victoria let out a bitter, heartbroken sob as the heavy steel doors slammed shut behind her, sealing her fate forever.
