Chapter 5 - The Secret of Rose’s Pendant

That evening, the rain poured relentlessly over the city, streaking the dark glass windows of Callaway Estate in Northern Heights.

Following the encounter at the hospital, Nathaniel had insisted on taking Rose to his family’s private estate under heavy armed guard. He knew Evelyn Sterling was desperate, and a desperate billionaire family was capable of violent measures.

Rose sat in the cozy, wood-paneled library of the estate, sipping hot tea. On the table across from her sat a warm bowl of soup prepared by the estate’s personal chef.

The door opened, and Eleanor stepped in, wearing a plush silk robe, supported by a polished cane.

“Mrs. Callaway,” Rose said, immediately attempting to stand up. “You should be resting.”

“Nonsense, child. Sit down,” Eleanor smiled warmly, waving her hand and taking a seat in the leather armchair across from Rose.

Eleanor stared intently at Rose’s neck.

Since Rose had changed out of her torn catering uniform into a comfortable cotton sweater provided by the staff, a small, worn silver pendant hung exposed against her chest.

“Rose,” Eleanor said softly, pointing to the necklace. “May I see that pendant?”

Rose reached up, touching the antique silver locket timidly. “Oh... this? It’s the only thing my mother left me before she passed away ten years ago.”

Rose unhooked the chain and handed the locket to Eleanor.

Eleanor’s hands trembled slightly as she opened the tiny silver latch. Inside was a faded, tiny photograph of a beautiful young woman with bright hazel eyes and a gentle smile.

Eleanor let out a sharp, ragged gasp. Her eyes filled with instant tears.

“I knew it...” Eleanor whispered, her voice shaking with profound emotion. “I knew those eyes looked familiar when you pulled me over the railing...”

At that moment, Nathaniel walked into the library carrying a stack of legal documents. He stopped in his tracks, seeing his mother weeping quietly.

“Mom? What’s wrong?” Nathaniel asked, rushing to her side.

Eleanor held up the locket to her son. “Nathaniel... look at this picture.”

Nathaniel looked at the tiny photograph in the locket, frowning slightly. “Who is she?”

“Her name was Clara Lin,” Eleanor wept, looking up at Rose. “She was my absolute best friend thirty years ago. She was the head archivist for Callaway Enterprises.”

Rose’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. “My mother... worked for your family?”

“She didn't just work for us, Rose,” Eleanor said, her voice filled with deep regret and long-buried sorrow. “Thirty years ago, your mother uncovered massive corporate fraud inside our board of directors—fraud committed by Julian Sterling’s father!”

Nathaniel looked at his mother in complete shock. “Julian Sterling’s father?”

“Yes!” Eleanor nodded, wiping her tears. “Clara found the evidence. But before she could present it to the authorities, Julian Sterling framed her for theft, destroyed her reputation, and forced her out of the industry! I tried to help her, but Clara disappeared into the shadows to protect her family from Sterling’s thugs.”

Eleanor reached across the table, taking Rose’s hands in a tight, emotional grip.

“Your mother was a hero who tried to save our family thirty years ago, Rose,” Eleanor said, tears falling freely down her face. “And thirty years later, her daughter saved my life on that rooftop.”

Rose sat frozen, a wave of warm, overwhelming emotion washing over her heart. All her life, she had believed her mother was just a quiet, unlucky woman who had died in poverty. She had never known the truth of her mother’s courage.

Nathaniel stared at Rose, a deep, powerful admiration kindling in his chest.

“The Sterlings have been preying on both of our families for decades,” Nathaniel said, his voice cold and resolute. “It ends tonight.”

Nathaniel’s encrypted cell phone rang on the desk. He picked it up, pressing it to his ear.

“Speak,” Nathaniel commanded.

“Mr. Callaway,” his chief security officer reported over the speaker. “We have a situation. Evelyn Sterling’s legal team just posted a fifty-million-dollar emergency bail bond for Victoria. Victoria has just been released from the central holding facility.”

Nathaniel’s eyes darkened into pitch blackness. “Where is she going?”

“Our tracking team shows her vehicle is heading straight toward the private docks at Pier 44,” the officer reported. “She’s meeting a boat. She’s fleeing the country.”
