Chapter 8 - A New Chapter for Toby

One month later.

The morning sun poured warmly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the pediatric recovery wing at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Seven-year-old Toby Lin sat up in his hospital bed, wearing superhero pajamas, happily eating a bowl of fresh strawberries while playing a video game on a brand-new tablet.

The color had returned to his cheeks. His breathing was smooth and easy.

Two days ago, Toby had undergone a highly complex, six-hour cardiac corrective surgery performed by the top pediatric surgeon in the nation—a surgery fully organized, coordinated, and funded by the Callaway Medical Foundation.

The door to the private room opened, and Rose walked in, carrying a large plush teddy bear.

“Toby!” Rose smiled brightly, setting the bear on his bed.

“Rose!” Toby cheered, dropping his tablet and hugging his sister tightly around her waist. “Look! The doctor said I can go home next week!”

Rose held her little brother close, tears of overwhelming joy falling onto his dark hair. For three long, agonizing years, she had stayed up late every night worrying whether her brother would survive to see his next birthday. Now, his future was bright, healthy, and secure.

The door opened again, and Nathaniel walked into the room, wearing a relaxed blue sweater and gray trousers. He was carrying a large box of custom wooden building blocks.

“Hey there, Chief,” Nathaniel smiled, setting the box on Toby’s bed.

“Nathaniel!” Toby yelled excitedly. “Did you bring the dragon set?!”

“You know it,” Nathaniel chuckled, sitting on the edge of the bed and helping Toby open the box.

Rose watched the two of them play together, a deep, warm feeling blooming inside her heart. Over the past month, Nathaniel hadn't just protected her legal standing—he had personally visited Toby at the hospital almost every single evening after leaving Callaway Tower. He had read him stories, played games with him, and ensured he received the absolute best medical care in the world.

After an hour of building wooden castles with Toby, the young boy drifted off into a peaceful afternoon nap, clutching his new teddy bear.

Nathaniel stood up quietly, gesturing for Rose to join him on the outdoor terrace attached to the private suite.

The air outside was fresh and warm, overlooking the lush green trees of Central Park.

Rose rested her arms on the stone balcony frame, looking out at the city skyline.

“He’s going to live a long, healthy life, Rose,” Nathaniel said softly, stepping up beside her, looking at her profile in the golden sunlight.

“I know,” Rose whispered, turning to look at him, her hazel eyes shining with deep gratitude. “I don't even know how to thank you, Nathaniel. You gave my brother his life back. You cleared my mother’s name.”

Nathaniel looked into her eyes, stepping closer, his voice soft and deep.

“You don't ever have to thank me, Rose,” Nathaniel said gently. “You saved my mother’s life. You brought truth and light back into my world when I was surrounded by greed and lies.”

Nathaniel reached out, his warm fingers gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

“When I looked at Victoria,” Nathaniel admitted quietly, “I thought society and marriage were built on cold transactions and social status. But when I saw you sprint across that rooftop... when I saw you risk your own life for a woman you didn't even know... I realized what real strength and courage looked like.”

Rose felt her heart leap in her chest, a soft flush rising to her cheeks.

“Nathaniel...” she whispered.

“I know it’s fast,” Nathaniel said softly, taking her bandaged hand into his own. “And I know we come from different worlds. But I want to build a world with you, Rose. A real one.”

Rose looked at the powerful, handsome billionaire who had stood up for her against the world. She smiled, stepping closer, resting her cheek gently against his chest.

“It’s not different worlds anymore, Nathaniel,” Rose whispered back. “It’s ours.”
