Chapter 10 - THE FORTRESS OF LIGHT

One year later.
The grand estate in San Pedro Garza García was unrecognizable.
The cold, silent marble halls that had once echoed with screams and terror were now filled with light, music, and laughter. The dark heavy drapes had been replaced with airy white linens that drifted in the mountain breeze.
It was a warm Saturday afternoon.
The grand manicured gardens behind the mansion were decorated with bright yellow balloons, white rose bowers, and colorful tables for Mateo’s sixth birthday party.
Over fifty children from the local school and the Santa Catarina community center were running across the green lawn, playing games, eating cake, and laughing under the bright Mexican sun.
Doña Socorro stood near the outdoor catering table, holding a silver tray of fresh lemonade, watching the children with a soft, rare smile on her face.
"I never thought I'd live to see this house laugh," Marco remarked, stepping beside the old housekeeper, sipping his coffee.
"It isn't a house anymore, Marco," Doña Socorro replied softly, looking toward the center of the garden. "It's a home."
At the edge of the lawn, near the newly blooming rose gardens, stood Alejandro and Valeria.
Valeria looked stunning in a simple white lace dress, holding a four-month-old baby girl wrapped in a soft pink blanket—Sofia Valeria Ríos, named in honor of the mother who had saved them from beyond the grave.
Alejandro stood beside her, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist, looking healthier, younger, and completely at peace.
Down on the grass, Mateo and Diego were leading a frantic game of tag with six other children, their happy squeals echoing across the estate.
Mateo suddenly paused, seeing his parents standing near the roses. He ran over, his face flushed red with exercise, his black hair messy, holding a small purple crayon in his hand.
"Look, Mama! Look, Papa!" Mateo chirped, holding up a small piece of paper he had kept in his pocket.
It was a drawing of the estate, surrounded by bright green trees, a huge sun, and four figures holding hands—including the new baby sister.
Alejandro crouched down, pulling his son into a warm, tight hug, kissing the top of his head. "It's the most beautiful drawing in the world, Mateo."
"Because it's real," Mateo said proudly, flashing a bright, toothy grin before running back to join Diego in the garden game.
Alejandro stood up, turning to face his wife. He looked down at his newborn daughter sleeping peacefully in Valeria’s arms, then into Valeria’s warm hazel eyes.
"What are you thinking?" Valeria asked gently, resting her head against his shoulder.
Alejandro reached out, lightly tracing the cheek of his sleeping baby girl, then taking Valeria’s hand in his, pressing his lips to her forehead.
"I'm thinking about the day you walked into my foyer with a cleaning bucket," Alejandro whispered softly, his amber eyes shining with profound, eternal love. "And how a poor maid from Santa Catarina conquered a fortress with simple kindness."
Valeria smiled, looking out over the sunlit gardens filled with their family, their children, and their new life.

"Love isn't poor, Alejandro," Valeria murmured softly, wrapping her arm around his waist as they watched the sun set over the Sierra Madre mountains. "Love is the only real wealth we have."
And in the warm, rose-scented breeze of San Pedro, the Ríos family was finally free.
