Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN LETTER

That night, after the entire mansion had fallen asleep and the security guards had shifted to their midnight rotation, Valeria sat on the floor of her private bathroom, locking the door behind her.

She sat under the soft yellow light of the vanity mirror, pulling the envelope from her apron pocket.

Her hands trembled slightly as she carefully broke the yellowed wax seal.

Inside was a three-page letter, written in fluid, elegant Spanish on heavy parchment paper. Attached to the back of the third page was a copy of a bank transaction receipt from an offshore entity in the Cayman Islands.

Valeria began to read.

“My dearest Alejandro,” the letter began, the ink slightly faded where tears had once fallen onto the paper two years ago.

“If you are reading this, it means my fears have come true. It means I am no longer here to protect our sweet Mateo, and that the shadows closing in on our family have finally struck.”

Valeria’s breath caught in her throat. She adjusted her position on the marble floor, reading faster.

“I know you believe that our enemies in Sinaloa or Tamaulipas are the ones threatening us. You look outside our walls for danger, my love, but the real venom sits at your own dining table.”

“Over the past six months, I have discovered massive financial discrepancies in our export accounts. Over forty million dollars has been diverted from our legitimate logistics firms into untraceable private accounts. When I confronted the senior accountant last month, he was terrified. He gave me a copy of the authorization wire—signed not by you, but by Hector.”

Valeria covered her mouth with a hand.

“Hector is setting you up, Alejandro. He has been leaking our transit routes to rival syndicates to create chaos, drive down the value of your legitimate holdings, and force the Commission to remove you as Don. He wants everything you built. He wants your title, your wealth, and this estate.”

“I tried to bring this evidence to you directly, but Hector knows I have it. He threatened Mateo. He told me that if I said a word to you, our son would pay the price. I am hiding this letter in Mateo’s nursery, behind his books, alongside a drive containing the full transaction logs.”

“Please, Alejandro... trust no one in this house. Protect our son. He is the only true light in this world.”

“Forever yours, Sofia.”

Valeria dropped the pages onto her lap, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs like a sledgehammer hitting stone.

The ambush two years ago... it hadn't been an external attack by rival cartels.

Hector had leaked Sofia’s travel route. Hector had orchestrated the attack that killed Sofia and traumatized Mateo.

Mateo hadn't just witnessed a random tragedy; he had seen his own uncle—the man who walked through these halls every day—arrange his mother's murder.

That was why Mateo went wild whenever Hector came near him. That was why the child threw things, bit, and screamed in terror whenever Hector tried to touch him. The boy was four years old, unable to articulate the horrific truth in words, trying desperately to tell his father that the monster was living under their roof.

Suddenly, a soft knock sounded on the bathroom door.

"Valeria?"

It was Alejandro’s deep, gravelly voice calling through the wood.

Valeria panicked. She quickly folded the letter, shoved it along with the bank receipt back into her apron pocket, and smoothed down her hair.

She stood up, took a deep breath to steady her shaking hands, and unlocked the bathroom door.

Alejandro stood in her bedroom hallway. He was dressed in a dark grey silk robe over a black T-shirt, holding a warm glass of milk in one hand and a small plush horse in the other.

He looked exhausted, but his dark eyes were soft as he looked at her.

"I'm sorry to bother you so late," Alejandro said quietly. "I saw the light under your door. I was... checking on Mateo."

He looked past her toward the king bed, where Mateo lay fast asleep, curled into a tight ball around Valeria’s pillow.

"He's fast asleep, Mr. Ríos," Valeria said, her voice slightly raspy. She stepped out into the bedroom, closing the bathroom door behind her.

Alejandro walked over to the bed, setting the plush horse gently beside his sleeping son. He reached out, his broad hand hesitating for a second before lightly brushing a lock of black hair from Mateo’s forehead.

"He looks peaceful," Alejandro murmured, a faint, sad smile touching his lips. "I haven't seen him look like this since Sofia died."

Valeria looked at the man standing before her. She saw a father who was utterly blind to the treason surrounding him—a man who had built a kingdom of fear to protect his family, while the real viper sat in his inner circle, drinking his scotch and managing his money.

"Mr. Ríos," Valeria said softly, her hazel eyes meeting his.

Alejandro turned to look at her. "Yes?"

"Do you... do you miss her very much?" Valeria asked gently. "Your wife?"

Alejandro’s expression darkened slightly with a profound, old pain. He looked away, staring toward the moonlit window.

"Every second of every day," Alejandro whispered. "Sofia was my conscience, Valeria. When I married her, I promised I would build a clean world for our children. I was transitioning our holdings into legitimate logistics and commercial real estate. But after she died... I fell back into the shadows. I thought the only way to keep Mateo safe was to become a monster."

"Monsters don't keep children safe, Mr. Ríos," Valeria said, taking a courageous step toward him. "Truth keeps them safe."

Alejandro frowned, sensing the strange, heavy weight behind her words. "What do you mean?"

Valeria reached into her apron pocket. Her fingers brushed against the rough parchment of Sofia's letter.

She opened her mouth to tell him—to hand him the letter and expose Hector right then and there.

Suddenly, the security alarm system inside the house let out three short, sharp beeps.

Alejandro’s radio receiver on his belt crackled to life with the panicked voice of his chief security operator: “Don Alejandro! We have an unauthorized perimeter breach at the eastern gate! Three unidentified vehicles are entering the lower driveway!”

Alejandro’s entire demeanor shifted instantly. The vulnerable father vanished, replaced in a heartbeat by the cold, lethal Don.

He pulled a matte-black 9mm pistol from a hidden holster under his robe.

"Stay in this room," Alejandro ordered Valeria, his voice sharp and absolute. "Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone except me or Marco. Do you understand?"

"Alejandro, wait—" Valeria pleaded.

"Lock the door!" he thundered, stepping out into the hallway and shutting the heavy oak door behind him with a slam.

May you like

Valeria ran to the door, turning the lock.

Outside, the mansion erupted into chaos—shouting, heavy footsteps echoing down the marble halls, and the cold, terrifying sound of automatic gunfire breaking through the night.
