Chapter 8 - THE VOICE OF AN ANGEL

An hour later, the estate was quiet again.
Federal forensic teams and trusted private contractors had cleared the hallway, removed the broken glass, and secured the perimeter. The sun was just beginning to peek over the Sierra Madre mountains, painting the sky in soft shades of gold, rose, and amber.
Valeria was sitting on the edge of the bed in her suite, holding a hot cup of chamomile tea that Doña Socorro had brought her.
Beside her sat Mateo.
The little boy had finally come out of the walk-in closet when Valeria returned. He was sitting cross-legged on the duvet, holding his purple crayon, drawing a brand-new picture on a large sheet of white paper.
The bedroom door opened softly.
Alejandro stepped inside. He had washed his face, changed into a clean navy wool sweater and jeans, and bandaged his shoulder graze.
He looked tired—exhausted down to his bones—but his eyes held a light that Valeria had never seen before.
He walked over to the bed, dropping to his knees beside Valeria.
"Is everything... over?" Valeria asked softly.
"It's over," Alejandro replied gently. "Hector is in federal custody. The syndicate Commission has been informed, and my family's holdings are officially clean. There are no more shadows in this house."
He reached out, taking Valeria’s hand in his. His broad, calloused fingers wrapped around hers with gentle, profound warmth.
"Dr. Morales spoke to the Chief of Cardiology at the private hospital in Monterrey thirty minutes ago," Alejandro continued softly. "Your brother Diego has been transferred to a private suite. The top pediatric surgeon in Northern Mexico is performing his heart procedure on Monday morning. Everything is fully paid for, Valeria. Everything."
Valeria’s breath hitched in her throat. Tears filled her hazel eyes, spilling over her lashes. "Alejandro... I... I don't know how to thank you—"
"No," Alejandro interrupted, his voice thick with emotion as he raised her hand to his lips, pressing a tender kiss to her knuckles. "Thank you, Valeria. You saved my son. You saved my soul. There is no amount of money in this world that could ever repay what you have given us."
As Valeria wept tears of profound relief and gratitude, a tiny hand reached out, tugging gently on Alejandro’s sweater sleeve.
Alejandro turned.
Mateo was holding up his paper drawing.
For two years, the child had drawn black swirls, red cars, and broken figures.
Now, on the white paper, was a drawing of three figures standing under a massive, bright yellow sun. A tall man, a small boy holding a purple crayon, and a woman in a blue dress with long dark blond hair.
Below the drawing, written in chaotic, large purple letters, was a single word.
Alejandro stared at the paper. His heart stopped beating.
Mateo reached out his small hand, touching his father’s cheek.
And then, the impossible happened.
The four-year-old boy, who had not uttered a sound for seven hundred and thirty days, opened his mouth.
"Papa," Mateo whispered softly, his voice small, raspy, but as clear as a crystal bell.
Alejandro froze. He looked at his son, his eyes wide with absolute, breathless wonder.
Mateo turned his head, looking at Valeria, his tiny thumb pointing to the woman in the blue dress on the paper.
"Ma-ma," Mateo murmured gently, a small, radiant smile breaking across his sweet face.
Alejandro broke down. He threw his arms around his son, pulling Mateo against his chest, weeping openly, letting out two years of pent-up pain, joy, and gratitude.

Mateo didn't pull away. He didn't bite. He wrapped his small arms around his father's neck, leaning his head against Alejandro's shoulder, laughing a tiny, sweet laugh that filled the room like morning light.
Valeria sat beside them, tears flowing down her face, her hand resting gently on Alejandro’s back as the three of them held each other in the warm morning sun.
