Chapter 9 - THE FLOWER OF SANTA CATARINA

Three months later.

The public hospital in Monterrey was busy, but inside the private recovery pavilion on the fourth floor, the room was quiet and flooded with sunlight.

Six-year-old Diego Gómez was sitting up in a motorized hospital bed, wearing bright red superhero pajamas, enthusiastically eating a bowl of chocolate ice cream.

His heart monitor was ticking at a steady, perfectly healthy sixty-eight beats per minute. The surgery had been an absolute success.

Sitting beside the bed was Valeria, wearing a soft pastel-yellow sundress, her hair falling in natural, romantic waves over her shoulders. She looked healthier, happier, and filled with a quiet, radiant peace.

The heavy wooden door to the private room opened.

In walked Alejandro, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, holding a massive box of building blocks, accompanied by Mateo, who was proudly wearing a tiny navy blazer and khaki trousers.

"Diego!" Mateo squeaked happily, running straight to the bed, holding up a new set of racing cars. "Look! Red ones!"

"Awesome!" Diego beamed, setting his ice cream down to grab the cars.

Over the past three months, Mateo’s speech had returned rapidly. He was no longer the silent ghost of the San Pedro estate; he was a bright, mischievous, incredibly smart five-year-old who loved dinosaurs, racing cars, and following Valeria everywhere she went.

Alejandro walked over to Valeria, stepping behind her chair, placing his broad hands gently on her shoulders.

"How is he doing today?" Alejandro asked, leaning down to press a soft kiss to the side of Valeria’s neck.

"The doctor said he can come home on Friday," Valeria replied, looking up at him with a warm, loving smile. "Full recovery."

"Good," Alejandro smiled. "Because the contractor finished the renovations on the Santa Catarina community center this morning. The 'Diego Gómez Pediatric Clinic' opens next month."

Valeria’s eyes softened with tears. After the crisis, Alejandro had established a multi-million-peso charitable foundation in Valeria’s hometown, funding pediatric heart surgeries, community centers, and clean water infrastructure for the working-class families of Santa Catarina.

He had stripped his business of every remaining shadow, turning his logistics empire into an entirely legitimate corporate entity operating across North America.

"You didn't have to do all of that, Alejandro," Valeria murmured, reaching up to cover his hand on her shoulder.

"I did," Alejandro said softly, looking down at her with intense, unvarnished devotion. "You reminded me of who I wanted to be, Valeria. You brought light back into my world. Building a better world for families like yours is the least I can do."

He reached into his suit jacket, pulling out a small velvet box.

Valeria’s breath caught in her throat.

Alejandro stepped around her chair, dropping down to one knee on the quiet hospital room floor, right in front of her.

Diego and Mateo stopped playing with their racing cars, both boys staring at Alejandro with wide, curious eyes.

"Valeria Gómez," Alejandro said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with an overwhelming love. "Three months ago, you walked into my house carrying a cleaning bucket, facing a wild child and a dangerous man. You stayed when everyone else ran. You healed my son, you saved my life, and you taught us how to love again."

He opened the velvet box, revealing a breathtaking, flawless pear-cut diamond ring set in platinum, surrounded by small emeralds—the color of her hazel eyes.

"Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife, my partner, and the mother of my children?" Alejandro asked softly.

Valeria looked down at the man kneeling before her—the man who had transformed from a terrifying cartel Don into a gentle, protective father who loved her with every beat of his heart.

"Yes," Valeria wept happily, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "Yes, Alejandro! A thousand times yes!"

Alejandro stood up, slipping the ring onto her finger before pulling her into his arms, kissing her deeply, holding her close as if he would never let her go.

"Yay!" Mateo cheered, jumping on the hospital bed alongside Diego. "We're a family now!"
