Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Trap

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the financial district of Manhattan was abuzz with quiet, frantic rumors.
Dante Mercer sat at the massive oval glass table on the 50th floor of Mercer Tower, nursing his third cup of black coffee. His eyes were bloodshot, his tie slightly loosened. Beside him sat Gabriel Vance, whose face was completely unreadable as he scrolled through his tablet.
"Did she take the bait?" Dante grunted, leaning forward. "Did the bank freeze her personal accounts under the medical petition?"
Gabriel shut off his tablet and looked at Dante with mild pity. "Mrs. Mercer’s attorneys filed an emergency counter-injunction at 6:00 AM, Dante. Not only did the judge toss our medical petition, but they also invoked the Romano Emergency Trust Asset Protection Act."
Dante froze. "What does that mean?"
"It means," Gabriel said slowly, "that as of seventy minutes ago, fifty-one percent of Mercer International’s liquidity reserve—the money you earmarked for the Singapore port acquisition—has been frozen by the federal court pending marital asset auditing."
"She can't do that!" Dante slammed his fist on the table, making the coffee cups rattle. "That acquisition closes in forty-eight hours! If we miss the funding deadline, the Singapore consortium defaults the contract, and our shares drop thirty percent by noon!"
"She knows that," Gabriel said dryly. "She drew up the Singapore contract, remember? She put that exact liquidity claw-back clause in section eight four years ago. You signed it without reading the fine print."
Dante gripped the edge of the table, his breathing heavy. "Call her. Get her on the phone right now."
Before Gabriel could move, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.
The room fell into an immediate, stunned hush.
Bella stepped into the boardroom.
She wore a tailored ivory cashmere coat over a dark maternity dress, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless knot. She looked radiant, powerful, and completely unbothered by the storm raging around her. Trailing behind her were three senior partners from Manhattan’s most terrifying corporate litigation firm, alongside Mateo Romano, who stood near the doorway like a silent wall of muscle.
Dante scrambled to his feet, his face flushing with fury. "Bella! What the hell is the meaning of this? You can't just walk into a closed board meeting!"
Bella walked to the head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the Chairman. She didn't ask for permission. She pulled out the chair and sat down slowly, resting her hands over her folded hands on the glass top.
"This meeting is no longer closed, Dante," Bella said, her voice echoing with crystal clarity. "As the managing trustee of the Romano Heritage Fund, which holds thirty-four percent of Mercer International’s voting shares, I am exercising my right to call an emergency governance review."
"You're acting out of emotional vengeance!" Dante spat, leaning over the table toward her. "Because of a personal marital dispute, you are putting a four-billion-dollar merger at risk!"
Bella looked up at him, her eyes cool and completely unimpressed.
"I don't make business decisions based on emotion, Dante," she said softly. "You know that better than anyone. That was always your primary complaint, wasn't it?"
She gestured to her lead attorney, who immediately distributed thick black folders to every board member sitting at the table.
"Page three, gentlemen," Bella instructed smoothly. "You will find the complete audit of Dante’s unauthorized personal expenditure accounts over the last fourteen months. Specifically, three million dollars redirected from the executive slush fund to purchase a luxury estate in the Hamptons, registered under the name of his administrative assistant, Bianca Reed."
The boardroom erupted into frantic murmurs. Senior board members quickly flipped through the pages, their faces turning pale as they read the damning financial trails.
Dante turned to Gabriel, his eyes wide with sudden panic. "Gabriel! Stop this!"
Gabriel Vance quietly pulled his papers together, closed his leather briefcase, and stepped two feet back from Dante.
"I am advising you as your legal counsel to remain quiet, Dante," Gabriel said softly. "Mrs. Mercer didn't just audit the accounts. She brought the receipts."
Bella leaned forward, resting her chin slightly on her hands. "The Singapore port deal goes through only if the board votes to appoint a temporary co-chair to oversee financial allocations until the marital asset division is finalized."
Dante stared at her, his voice shaking with pure hatred. "And who do you propose as co-chair?"
May you like
Bella smiled—a cold, beautiful, sharp smile that cut through him like a blade.
"Me."
