Chapter 8 - The Price of Independence

Three weeks later, the initial storm had settled into a steady, controlled calm.
Bella stood in the center of the newly renovated master nursery at the Fifth Avenue penthouse. The walls were painted a soft, soothing shade of cream and lavender, illuminated by warm sunlight streaming through the tall windows.
Her phone rang softly on the wooden changing table. She picked it up, seeing Mateo’s name on the screen.
"Report, Mateo," she said.
"The divorce settlement was finalized an hour ago," Mateo reported from his office. "Dante signed every document without contesting a single clause. He surrendered all rights to Mercer International shares, accepted a minor fixed annual stipend from a restricted trust, and relinquished all parental claim demands regarding your daughter."
Bella took a deep, quiet breath. "And Bianca?"
"She moved back to her hometown in Ohio," Mateo said. "Dante gave her the Hamptons property deed, but her lawyers sold it off immediately to clear her legal defense fees. Dante is currently living in a rented one-bedroom apartment in Queens. He’s tried applying for advisory roles at three boutique firms, but nobody will touch him after the Romano audit went public."
Bella looked out the window at the peaceful park below. There was no joy in hearing about his downfall—only a profound, quiet sense of closure. She had given seven years of her life to a man who saw her strength as a threat; now, she was free to build a world where her strength was a shield for her daughter.

"Thank you, Mateo," Bella said softly. "For everything."
"You built this victory yourself, Little Bird," Mateo replied warmly. "Your grandfather would have been immensely proud."
