Chapter 9 - The New Reign

Six weeks after the board vote, the grand ballrooms of the Plaza Hotel were illuminated with golden crystal chandeliers for the annual Manhattan Global Financial Summit.
The room was filled with international heads of state, venture capital titans, and old-money aristocrats. At the center of the main floor stood Bella Romano.
She was eight and a half months pregnant, looking impossibly radiant in a custom-tailored emerald green silk gown that draped gracefully over her rounded silhouette. Around her stood five of the most powerful institutional investors in North America, listening intently as she outlined her strategy for the green-energy conversion of the Singapore port facilities.
"The key to long-term yield," Bella explained smoothly, her voice commanding the full attention of the circle, "is not aggressive leverage, but structural risk mitigation. If you secure the supply chains before negotiating the tariffs, the margins manage themselves."
The investors nodded in deep agreement, scribbling notes on their phones.
From across the ballroom, near the entrance doors, a figure stood watching her from the shadows.
It was Dante.
He had managed to slip past the outer security using an old alumni pass, wearing a faded suit that hung loosely on his noticeably thinner frame. He stood by a marble pillar, watching his former wife command the room with absolute, effortless brilliance.
He saw the way the world’s most powerful leaders looked at her—not with judgment, not with pity, but with profound, absolute admiration. He saw the way she smiled, confident and completely whole, carrying their unborn daughter with unshakeable pride.
A waiter walked past Dante carrying a tray of champagne glasses. Dante reached out, his hand trembling, and took one.
As he lifted the glass to his lips, Bella’s eyes drifted toward the entrance.
For a brief, fleeting second, her gaze met his across the crowded, glittering ballroom.

She didn't look angry. She didn't look triumphant. She looked at him with the cool, polite detachment one offers a stranger in passing. Then, she slowly turned back to her conversation, completely erasing him from her world.
Dante set the un-tasted champagne glass down on a nearby table, turned around, and walked out into the dark, cold night alone.
