Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

By mid-afternoon, the financial media was in a frenzy. Headlines across Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal read: MERCER INTERNATIONAL IN TURMOIL: BELLA ROMANO MERCER ASSUMES EMERGENCY CO-CHAIR AMID EMBEZZLEMENT AUDIT.
Inside the private office on Fifth Avenue, Bella sat behind her glass desk, staring out at the grey city skyline. A quiet knock sounded at the door before Mateo stepped inside, holding a hot cup of herbal tea.
"You should eat something, Little Bird," Mateo said softly, setting the cup down beside her. "The doctors said your blood pressure needs to stay stable."
"I’m fine, Mateo," Bella said, taking a slow sip of the tea. "Where is Dante?"
"He fled to the Hamptons estate with the girl," Mateo replied, a disgusted scowl touching his scarred face. "He’s trying to keep her away from the press, but reporters are already camping outside the gates. The board gave him twenty-four hours to produce a formal response to the embezzlement charges, or they will initiate a vote of no confidence."
Bella leaned back in her high-backed leather chair, her fingers resting lightly on her belly. "He won't respond with legal arguments, Mateo. Dante is weak when he's cornered. He will do what he always does when his ego is threatened—he’ll look for a hammer."
"You think he’ll go to the Moretti family?" Mateo asked, his tone instantly darkening.
The Morettis were the old rivals of the Romano family—a dark, ruthless faction that operated in the shadows of the city's construction and shipping syndicates. For decades, Lorenzo Romano had kept the Morettis at bay through sheer tactical brilliance. But Dante had secretly cultivated contacts with Julian Moretti over the last two years, attempting to build his own private muscle independent of the Romano network.
"Dante thinks Julian Moretti is his friend because Julian laughs at his jokes and lends him his yacht," Bella said coldly. "He doesn't realize Julian has been waiting for an opening to breach the Romano perimeter for ten years. If Dante goes to him out of desperation, Julian will use him to burn down everything I've built."
Right on cue, her phone lit up on the desk.
It was an encrypted voice message routed through an offshore server. Bella tapped the speaker button.
"Bella, darling," Julian Moretti’s smooth, oily voice filled the room. "I just had a very interesting visit from your husband. He’s very upset. He’s offering me twenty percent of Mercer’s shipping logistics rights if I help him... settle this marital dispute discreetly."
Bella didn't flinch. "What do you want, Julian?"
"I want what your grandfather denied me twenty years ago," Julian replied smoothly. "A seat at the main table. Tell your boys to stand down from the Mercer ports, Bella. Let Dante have his little win, and we can all share the profits. Otherwise... pregnant women can have such fragile health during stressful litigation. It would be a tragedy if something happened to your car on those rainy roads."
Mateo’s hand instinctively dropped to the holster beneath his jacket, his eyes flaring with violent rage.
Bella raised a single hand, signaling Mateo to stay quiet. She leaned closer to the phone, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying whisper that chilled the line.
"Julian," she said slowly. "You are holding a broken pen while I hold the ledger. If you so much as stand on the same street as my vehicle, I won't just publish Dante's audits. I will release the complete financial manifests of the Moretti shipping containers currently sitting in Dock 4."
The silence on the line was instantaneous.
"You wouldn't," Julian whispered, his smooth tone completely vanishing. "That would ruin you too."

"I am seven months pregnant, hurt, and taking apart a empire I built for a man who didn't deserve it," Bella said with lethal calm. "Do you really think I care about collateral damage? Touch my life, Julian, and I will sink your ships with you standing on the deck."
She ended the call without waiting for a reply.
