Chapter 5 - The Silent War

Rain continued to lash the city over the next three days as the corporate war escalated into an outright siege.
Dante Mercer sat in the dimly lit study of his Hamptons house, staring at three empty bottles of scotch scattered across the Persian rug. Across from him, Bianca sat shivering in an armchair, wrapped in a thick blanket, weeping silently as her phone vibrated with relentless notifications from tabloid journalists.
"Stop crying!" Dante snapped, his voice hoarse and raw. "Just shut up for one minute!"
Bianca flinched, pulling the blanket tighter around her shoulders. "You said... you said she would just leave, Dante! You said she’d take a settlement and go back to her family! You told me she wouldn't fight!"
"I thought I knew her!" Dante roared, slamming his glass against the desk. "I thought she had some sense of dignity! She's tearing down Mercer International out of spite! She’s destroying my legacy!"
"It was her legacy too, Dante," a quiet voice spoke from the shadows of the doorway.
Dante whirled around.
Gabriel Vance stood near the entrance, holding a leather briefcase. His expression was cold, professional, and entirely detached.
"What are you doing here, Gabriel?" Dante demanded. "Did you bring the countersuit papers?"
"No," Gabriel said smoothly, walking into the room and placing a single white envelope on the desk. "I brought my formal resignation as senior legal counsel for Mercer International."
Dante blinked, stunned. "Resignation? You’re abandoning me now? After seven years?"
"I signed on to represent Mercer International under the leadership of a brilliant, strategic partnership," Gabriel said evenly. "I watched Mrs. Mercer navigate three federal investigations and save this company from bankruptcy twice while you took the press photo-ops. You traded a master strategist for a woman who flatters your ego, Dante. That wasn't just a moral failure—it was a catastrophic business decision."
"She paid you off!" Dante yelled, pointing an accusatory finger. "She bought you!"
"She didn't have to buy me," Gabriel replied calmly. "She showed me the numbers. You’re bankrupt, Dante. The board votes on your formal removal tomorrow at 9:00 AM. Julian Moretti pulled his security teams out an hour ago after Mrs. Mercer sent a notice to federal customs. You have no muscle, no money, and no support."
Gabriel turned toward the door, pausing briefly to look at Bianca.
"If I were you, Miss Reed," Gabriel added quietly, "I would hire a very good family lawyer before the week is out. Because when Mrs. Mercer finishes taking what he owes her, there won't be enough left in his bank account to pay for child support."

Gabriel walked out, leaving the heavy front door open to the sound of the howling wind.
Dante stared at the white envelope on the desk, his hands shaking violently. For the first time in his life, the dark, suffocating reality of his own utter insignificance washed over him. He wasn't the king. He had never been the king. He was just a hollow man who had burned down his own castle because he couldn't stand the sight of the woman who built it.
