Chapter 6 - The Battle of Pier 14

Rain lashed against the rusted corrugated steel of Warehouse 14 at the edge of Grayhaven’s northern docks.

Inside the cavernous, dimly lit space, Julian Vane stood surrounded by twelve heavily armed mercenaries. Bound to wooden chairs in the center of the concrete floor were five Blackwood dock supervisors, bruised and bleeding.

Vane checked his gold watch. “Ten minutes until midnight. Where is the billionaire and his precious maid?”

Suddenly, the massive steel doors of the warehouse were blown inward with a deafening EXPLOSION!

Smoke, twisted metal, and blinding white light flooded the building.

Before the mercenaries could raise their weapons, dark figures moved through the smoke with terrifying, surgical precision. Suppressed gunshots echoed rapidly—thwip, thwip, thwip!

Four mercenaries collapsed to the ground instantly.

Through the clearing smoke walked Ronan Blackwood.

He was not wearing a business suit tonight. He wore a dark tactical coat, black gloves, and carried a custom matte-black pistol. Behind him stood twenty of Blackwood’s elite security forces, locking down every exit in seconds.

Vane pulled his pistol, grabbing one of the hostages and holding the gun to the worker’s head.

“Step back, Blackwood!” Vane shouted, his voice echoing frantically. “Or I paint the floor with his brains! Where is the girl?”

Ronan walked forward smoothly, stopping twenty feet away, completely ignoring the gun pointed at the hostage. His hazel eyes were cold, void of all humanity—the legendary demon of Grayhaven resurrected.

“She isn't here, Vane,” Ronan said softly, his voice cutting through the storm outside. “I don't bring my treasures into garbage dumps.”

“She stole from me!” Vane screamed. “She owes me forty million dollars and ten years of my life!”

“She owes you nothing,” Ronan replied, taking a slow step closer. “You came into my city. You threatened my workers. And you dared to put a mark on the woman who wears my ring.”

Vane frowned. “What ring?”

Before Vane could process the words, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the rafters above.

A flash grenade dropped straight from the ceiling grid, detonating directly above Vane’s head—BANG!

Blinding light and high-frequency sound shattered Vane’s senses. He stumbled back, dropping the hostage, clutching his eyes in agony.

In that split second of chaos, Ronan moved like lightning.

He closed the distance in two strides, grabbed Vane’s gun arm, twisted it upward until the bone snapped with a sharp CRACK!, and swept Vane’s legs out from under him.

Vane hit the wet concrete hard, gasping for air.

Ronan placed his heavy combat boot directly onto Vane’s chest, pinning him to the floor, pointing his pistol straight between the syndicate boss’s eyes.

The remaining mercenaries threw their weapons down instantly, raising their hands in surrender to Blackwood’s forces.

Vane looked up at Ronan, coughing blood, terror finally breaking through his arrogant facade.

“Blackwood... please...” Vane choked out. “It was just business... we can make a deal...”

“You don't make deals with dead men, Vane,” Ronan whispered coldly.

He didn't pull the trigger. Ronan was a modern boss—he didn't leave bodies for the police to find.

Marcus stepped forward, holding a satellite phone connected to federal authorities.

“Federal agents are outside, Mr. Blackwood,” Marcus reported. “They have the warrants for human trafficking and grand extortion based on the files Director Lancaster provided this evening.”

Ronan looked down at Vane, his eyes cold and unyielding.

“You’re going to a maximum-security prison for the rest of your life, Vane,” Ronan said quietly. “And every day you sit in that cell, you will remember that a maid in a black apron brought you down.”
