Chapter 4 - The Ledger Unleashed

By three in the morning, the kitchen island was covered in sheets of blank grid paper, three black fountain pens, and a large pot of strong dark coffee.

Khloe sat with her sleeves rolled up, her hair tied back in a messy bun, lost in a trance of pure calculation. Her fingers moved with blinding speed, translating complex numerical sequences onto the paper.

Dominic stood near the window, watching her over the rim of his coffee mug.

"185 degrees for 45 minutes equals Account 18-54-5," Khloe muttered under her breath, scratching down a string of offshore routing numbers. "The flour ratio gives the bank code in Zurich... Swiss Union Bank, account name 'Sourdough-9'."

Dominic stepped closer, leaning over her shoulder to inspect the clean, precise handwriting. "This is... incredible. You're unspooling a decade of international money laundering from memory."

"My father made me recite these formulas every Sunday while we baked bread," Khloe said softly, a faint, nostalgic smile playing on her lips. "I thought we were just playing a memory game. I didn't realize until I was eighteen that he was building a vault inside my head."

Suddenly, a red light on the kitchen wall began to pulse silently.

Dominic set his mug down instantly. He pulled a sleek, custom Glock from a holster beneath his vest, his demeanor shifting instantly into that of an apex predator.

He tapped an intercom button on the wall. "Report."

"Boss," his underboss, Marcus, answered through the speaker, his voice tight. "We’ve got three black SUVs breaching the front gate. Heavy weaponry. They brought thermal cutters."

Dominic glanced at Khloe. "Kensington’s private security detail."

"How did they find this place?" Khloe asked, her heart racing as she gathered her hand-written sheets, clutching them to her chest.

"Vivien’s father has access to state police satellite tracking," Dominic spat, checking the action on his pistol. "They pinged my vehicle's transponder before I could disable it."

He walked over to a decorative brick panel beside the pantry, pressed a hidden release lever, and a section of the wall swung open smoothly, revealing a reinforced steel door leading to an underground security suite.

"Get in there," Dominic commanded, turning to face her. "It’s a safe room. Biometric lock. Independent oxygen supply. Nobody gets through that door without an anti-tank missile."

"What about you?" Khloe demanded, grabbing his sleeve.

"I have six heavy operators in the perimeter barracks," Dominic said, offering her a cold, reassuring smile. "And this is my house. They made a mistake coming here."

He gently pushed her toward the door, but Khloe stood her ground, her heavy frame anchored to the floor.

"Take this," Khloe said, pulling a sheet from her pile and slapping it into his palm. "It’s the primary routing code for Kensington’s offshore slush fund in Panama. If you broadcast that code to the Treasury Department’s automated enforcement portal, his accounts freeze in thirty seconds."

Dominic looked down at the paper, then back at her face, his eyes glowing with fierce admiration.

"You really are far more dangerous than anyone understood, aren't you?" he whispered.

"I’m a baker’s daughter," Khloe said softly. "We know how to burn things."

Dominic keyed his thumb into the biometric pad, shoved her gently inside, and the heavy steel door slammed shut, sealing her in complete safety.
