Chapter 9 - A Seat at the Table

Three months later.
The grand opening of Bennett’s Bakery was the biggest event in the North End.
The line of customers wrapped around the corner of the cobblestone street. The air inside smelled of cinnamon, roasted espresso, and fresh sourdough bread.
Khloe stood behind the counter in a clean white baker’s jacket, her dark hair pinned up neatly, a warm, radiant smile on her face as she handed a box of warm cannolis to a local neighborhood family.
She had gained three pounds, lost her tired eyes, and walked with an absolute aura of self-assured confidence. She was no longer the invisible waitress in wet shoes. She was the most respected business owner in the district.
Suddenly, the bell above the door chimed softly.
The bustling crowd in the bakery went quiet, stepping back respectfully to open a path.
Dominic Costello walked into the bakery.
He wore a dark grey tailored suit, carrying a massive bouquet of yellow sunflowers—her favorite. Behind him walked Marcus, his underboss, carrying a small, ribbon-wrapped box.
Dominic walked right up to the glass display counter, his eyes fixed entirely on Khloe.
"Good morning, Miss Bennett," Dominic said, his deep voice filling the cozy bakery.
"Good morning, Mr. Costello," Khloe smiled, leaning her elbows against the glass counter. "You're late for your morning coffee."
"I was busy finalizing some corporate paperwork," Dominic said, setting the flowers on the counter. "The Costello family has officially transitioned all logistics operations into legitimate, union-backed maritime freighting. Marcus here is our new chief compliance officer."
Marcus grunted with a small, proud nod.
Khloe’s eyes brightened. "You went fully legitimate?"
"I told you," Dominic murmured, leaning over the counter slightly so only she could hear him. "I'm done sitting with hyenas."
He nodded to Marcus, who set the small ribbon-wrapped box on the counter.
"What's this?" Khloe asked, untying the ribbon.
Inside the box sat a beautifully framed brass plaque. On it were engraved the words:
TO KHLOE BENNETT: THE STRONGEST FOUNDATION IN BOSTON.
Khloe looked up at him, her eyes sparkling with affection. "You're getting sweet in your old age, Dominic."

"Only for my favorite baker," Dominic replied, offering her his hand across the counter.
Khloe took his hand, feeling the warm, strong squeeze of a man who had built a brand-new life alongside her.
