Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Kensingtons

Vivien’s eyes went wide as saucers as the truth hit her like a physical blow.

"That... that fat waitress?!" Vivien shrieked, her voice cracking into pathetic, shrill tears. "She did this?!"

"Her name is Khloe Bennett," Dominic snapped, his tone so sharp it made Vivien flinch backward. "And she has more intelligence, dignity, and courage in her smallest finger than your entire bloodline possesses."

Outside the estate, the distant wail of federal law enforcement sirens echoed through the rain. Dozens of red and blue lights illuminated the perimeter trees as armored FBI vehicles smashed through the broken front gates.

Federal agents poured into the foyer, weapons drawn.

"Federal agents! Put your weapons down! Hands where we can see them!"

Dominic calmly set his pistol down on a nearby side table and raised his hands, completely relaxed.

Kensington tried to back away toward the door. "I’m a United States Senator! You can't touch me! I have immunity!"

"Not for high treason and money laundering, Senator," the lead FBI field director announced, stepping forward with drawn handcuffs. "We have live digital transmission records linking your personal accounts to international cartel logistics. You're under arrest."

As the agents slammed Kensington against the marble wall and snapped handcuffs around his wrists, Vivien dropped to her knees, weeping hysterically, her greasy, ruined hair falling over her face.

Dominic walked away from the commotion, walking straight down the corridor toward the safe room panel.

Inside, Khloe hit the door release button.

The heavy steel door swung open.

Dominic stood in the doorway. He looked tired, his white shirt splattered with dirt and blood, but his dark eyes were bright as he looked at her.

"It's over," he said softly.

Khloe stepped out of the safe room, looking around at the quiet corridor. "Did it work?"

"Kensington is going to federal prison for the rest of his natural life," Dominic said. "And the union pension fund just received a thirty-million-dollar anonymous wire transfer."

Khloe let out a long, heavy breath she felt like she had been holding for six years. Her shoulders dropped, and she leaned back against the wall, a sudden wave of exhaustion sweeping over her body.

Dominic stepped closer, placing a warm, heavy hand on her shoulder. "You saved my life tonight, Khloe. And my enterprise."

Khloe looked up into his dark, intense eyes. "I just finished my father’s work."

"No," Dominic corrected gently, his thumb tracing the soft line of her jawline near her bruise. "Your father built the vault. You were the weapon."
