Chapter 2 - A Sentence Written in Silence

The silence inside the kitchen felt heavy enough to crush bone. Lorenzo stood up slowly, towering over Lily once more. The effortless air of a wealthy executive was completely gone; in its place stood the cold executioner who had clawed his way to the top of New York's underworld through blood and calculation.

He pulled a folded linen handkerchief from his breast pocket and held it out down to her.

"Clean your face," he commanded gently, though his tone left no room for argument.

Lily took the cloth with trembling fingers and pressed it against her swollen eyes. "Mr. Moretti, please... if he finds out I told you—"

"He will not have the opportunity to speak to anyone ever again," Lorenzo interrupted, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a silver smartphone. He tapped a single speed-dial entry and brought the phone to his ear.

"Boss?" answered the gravelly voice of Matteo, Lorenzo's head of personal security, who slept in the carriage house near the estate gates.

"Bring the Suburban to the back patio," Lorenzo ordered flatly. "And call Paulie. Tell him to track Vincent's primary vehicle. I want his exact location within five minutes."

"Understood, Boss. Is there a security breach at the main house?"

"An internal one," Lorenzo replied. "Move quickly."

He ended the call and slipped the phone back into his pocket. He turned his gaze back down to Lily, who was still trembling on the floor, clinging to the edge of her cleaning apron.

"Can you stand?" he asked.

Lily nodded weakly. She placed her hand on the edge of the island and pushed herself up, though her knees buckled slightly. Lorenzo caught her elbow, holding her steady with a firm, warm grip until she regained her balance.

"You will not return to the staff quarters tonight," Lorenzo stated, his eyes scanning her pale face. "You are moving to the guest suite in the west wing."

Lily’s eyes widened in alarm. "The west wing? Mr. Moretti, I cannot stay there. The house manager—Mrs. Gable—she will ask questions. The other maids—"

"Mrs. Gable works for me, and she values her employment too much to question my instructions," Lorenzo cut her off smoothly. "The west wing is monitored by my personal security detail twenty-four hours a day. No one enters that wing without my biometric clearance. You will be safe there."

He led her toward the kitchen doors, unlocking the deadbolt with a swift turn of his wrist. The heavy oak doors swung open, revealing the cavernous, dimly lit hallway beyond.

As they walked side by side toward the grand staircase, Lily felt as though she were walking through a surreal dream. Just an hour ago, she had been a nameless servant scrubbing marble to avoid her own thoughts; now, she was being escorted through the master wing of the estate by the most feared man in the city.

When they reached the suite at the end of the west corridor, Lorenzo opened the door and gestured for her to step inside. The room was immense, larger than any apartment Lily had ever lived in. It featured a king-sized bed wrapped in dark silk sheets, a marble fireplace that glowed with low artificial embers, and a massive bay window overlooking the ocean.

"There are clean clothes in the wardrobe," Lorenzo told her, standing in the doorway. "The bathroom is stocked. Lock the door from the inside and do not open it for anyone except me or Matteo."

Lily stepped into the plush carpet, turning back to face him. "Mr. Moretti... why are you doing this for me? I am just a maid."

Lorenzo stared at her for a long, quiet moment. The soft lighting of the corridor cast deep shadows across his sharp jawline.

"You are a member of my household," he said, his voice dropping into a low, absolute register. "And no one lays a hand on what belongs under my roof. Rest, Lily. By morning, this matter will be resolved."

Before she could respond, he pulled the heavy mahogany door shut. She heard the soft click of the electronic lock engaging from the outside, sealing her into a fortress of quiet luxury.

Downstairs, the quiet rumble of a heavy engine echoed through the driveway. Lorenzo walked down the grand staircase, his face entirely unreadable, as Matteo met him at the main entrance holding a long black umbrella and a heavy cashmere coat.

"We located Vincent, Boss," Matteo reported, holding the front door open as rain lashed against the porch. "He's at his private club in Astoria. He's been drinking with two of his captains since midnight."

Lorenzo slipped his arms into the coat, his hands settling smoothly into his pockets.

"Tell Paulie to secure the exits," Lorenzo said, stepping out into the pouring rain toward the waiting armored SUV. "I don't want a single person leaving that building until I arrive."
