Chapter 4 - A New Morning in the West Wing

The morning light broke over the Atlantic Ocean in pale shades of gold and grey, casting long shadows across the floor of the guest suite.
Lily had not slept. She sat wrapped in a plush cream-colored robe on the edge of the immense king-sized bed, her legs pulled up to her chest, watching the rain fade into a fine mist against the windowpane. Every minor noise in the hallway—the distant hum of a vacuum, the click of a door handle—made her heart race with fresh panic.
At seven o'clock precisely, the electronic lock on the suite door beeped, and the heavy mahogany door swung open.
Lorenzo walked inside.
He was no longer wearing the charcoal suit from the previous night. He wore a crisp, dark blue dress shirt with the sleeves neatly folded up to his elbows, tailored trousers, and clean leather shoes. His hair was freshly washed, and his jaw was smoothly shaved. He looked rested, powerful, and completely unbothered, as though the storm from the night before had never occurred.
Behind him walked a young female servant holding a silver tray loaded with fresh fruit, pastries, poached eggs, and a pot of herbal tea.
"Leave it on the table near the window," Lorenzo instructed the girl softly.
The servant quickly placed the tray down, offered a brief, respectful curtsey, and exited the room without raising her eyes to look at Lily. Lorenzo locked the door behind her.
Lily stood up from the bed, her hands clutching the collar of her robe tightly. "Mr. Moretti..."
"Eat," Lorenzo said, walking over to the small marble table by the window and pulling out one of the velvet armchairs for her. "You need your strength."
Lily approached the table slowly, her eyes scanning his face, searching for any sign of what had transpired during the night. "Is he... is Vincent—"
"Vincent will no longer be a concern for you, or for anyone else in this city," Lorenzo stated plainly, taking a seat in the opposite chair. He picked up a porcelain cup and poured himself a dark espresso from a silver pot. "His operations in Queens are being restructured under Paulie's control as we speak."
Lily sank into the chair, her knees suddenly feeling faint. She knew what his words implied. The dangerous, powerful man who had terrorized her for weeks, who had threatened to throw her body into the river, was gone. Erased completely from the world by the man sitting across from her, calmly drinking coffee.
"Did... did the police come?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
Lorenzo let out a faint, dry hum that almost sounded like humor. "The police do not investigate the disappearance of men like Vincent Costa. They know better." He set his cup down on the saucer with a delicate clink. "Now, eat your breakfast."
Lily looked down at the array of fresh food. A sudden wave of morning nausea hit her stomach, sharp and unyielding. She turned her head away, her skin paling slightly as she pressed her hand against her abdomen.
Lorenzo’s keen eyes didn't miss the reaction. He leaned back in his chair, his dark gaze zeroing in on her posture, specifically the way her fingers lingered over her lower belly.
"You aren't just exhausted," Lorenzo observed, his voice dropping into a quiet, searching register. "You haven't eaten properly in days. And you reacted to the smell of the food the moment she brought it in."
Lily froze. She pulled her hand away from her stomach as if she had been burned, her breathing becoming shallow and fast. "I am just... my stomach is sensitive..."
Lorenzo leaned forward, resting his forearms on the marble tabletop, his dark eyes locking onto hers with terrifying intensity.
"Lily," he said softly, his voice carrying a weight that made it impossible to run. "How long have you been pregnant?"
A gasp caught in Lily’s throat. Tears instantly welled in her eyes, spilling over her lashes before she could stop them. She covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking as the final, horrifying secret she had been carrying alone collapsed around her.
"Two months," she sobbed into her hands, her voice broken. "Two months..."
Lorenzo did not react with anger or shock. He remained completely motionless, watching her cry. The timeline was unmistakable; two months placed the conception precisely at the time Vincent had cornered her in the basement.
The silence stretched on, filled only by the quiet sound of Lily's tears.
When Lorenzo finally spoke, his tone was unlike anything she had heard from him before. It was not the voice of a syndicate boss or a cold employer; it was thick with a quiet, dangerous resolve.
"The child," Lorenzo asked, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unreadable fire. "Is it his?"
Lily wiped her face frantically, looking up at him through her blurred vision, her chest heaving as she shook her head with absolute certainty.
"No!" she choked out, her voice rising in desperate denial. "No! I... I had a boyfriend... David. He left the country two months ago when he found out I couldn't pay my mother's hospital bills... it was before... before Vincent ever touched me! I swear to you, Mr. Moretti! I swear on my mother's grave!"
Lorenzo stared at her for five long seconds, absorbing her frantic words, reading every muscle in her face to confirm the truth. Slowly, the terrifying tension in his broad shoulders seemed to shift.
He stood up from his chair, walked around the small marble table, and stood directly beside her. He reached down, taking her trembling hands into his broad, warm palms, pulling her gently to her feet.
"Good," Lorenzo whispered, his thumb wiping a stray tear from her cheek with startling softness. "Because if it were his, I would have had to tear down everything he ever touched." He paused, his dark eyes searching hers. "If it is yours, then it is under my protection."
Lily looked at him, completely bewildered. "Mr. Moretti... I cannot stay here. I am a maid. I am pregnant, unmarried, and my family owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills to Mount Sinai. I have nothing."
May you like
Lorenzo stepped closer, his thumb resting gently against the side of her jaw.
"You have my protection," Lorenzo said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "And as of today, Lily... you are no longer a maid in this house."
