Chapter 7 - Whispers in the West Wing

Two months passed, bringing the bright, crisp air of mid-autumn to the North Shore of Long Island. The leaves along the grand driveway of the Moretti estate turned vibrant shades of crimson, gold, and orange, drifting down onto the manicured lawns.

Inside the mansion, Lily’s life had been completely transformed. Her small bump was now clearly visible beneath the soft, elegant dresses Lorenzo had ordered for her. Her pale, exhausted skin had regained a healthy glow, and the dark circles beneath her eyes had vanished completely, replaced by a soft, quiet serenity.

She spent her mornings in the estate's sprawling greenhouse, learning to care for the rare orchids Lorenzo cultivated, or reading in the sunlit library.

Yet, despite the luxury and comfort, Lily remained acutely aware of the invisible boundaries of her new reality. She was not Lorenzo's wife, nor was she a guest in the traditional sense. She was something entirely unique—a woman held in the highest esteem by the master of the house, guarded like a precious treasure by armed men who shadowed her every move.

One afternoon, while walking through the rose garden with a light shawl draped over her shoulders, she noticed two guards standing near the iron perimeter gates, talking in hushed tones.

"Dominic Costa is still in town," one of the guards whispered, unaware that the soft autumn breeze was carrying his voice toward the garden path. "He’s been trying to rally Vincent's old crew in Brooklyn."

"He’s a dead man walking," the second guard replied, checking his sidearm. "The Boss has three teams looking for him. The moment he steps out of line, it's over."

"Yeah, but he’s desperate. He thinks the girl at the house is the key to everything. He told one of his guys he wants to take her to force Lorenzo into a sit-down."

Lily froze on the gravel path, her hand instinctively coming up to rest over her belly. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Dominic Costa. Vincent's brother.

The nightmare she thought Lorenzo had buried was still breathing, lurking in the shadows outside the estate walls, looking for a way to use her against the man who had saved her life.

"Lily."

She gasped, turning around quickly. Lorenzo was walking down the marble steps of the terrace toward her, dressed in a black turtleneck sweater and charcoal trousers. The intimidating air he carried in front of his men always seemed to soften slightly whenever he approached her.

"You look pale," Lorenzo noted, reaching her side and placing a gentle hand at the small of her back. "Is the baby kicking?"

"No," Lily whispered, looking up into his dark, intelligent eyes. "Lorenzo... I heard the guards talking near the gate."

Lorenzo’s expression hardened instantly, his dark brows drawing together. "Which guards?"

"It doesn't matter," Lily took his hand, her fingers wrapping around his broad palm. "They said Vincent's brother... Dominic. They said he is trying to come after me to get to you."

Lorenzo stared down at her for a moment, then let out a slow, deliberate breath. He reached out with his other hand, cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing over her soft skin.

"Dominic is a minor nuisance who does not possess the intellect to pull off a threat," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a deep, reassuring tone. "He is running out of money and running out of places to hide. You do not need to concern yourself with him."

"I am not worried about myself, Lorenzo," Lily said softly, her eyes searching his face with genuine affection. "I am worried about you. You have done so much for me... you cleared my mother's debt, you gave me a home, you protected my child... if something happened to you because of me—"

Lorenzo stopped her words by placing his thumb gently against her lips.

"Nothing will happen to me," Lorenzo said, his gaze burning with an intensity that made her breath catch. "In this city, I am the apex predator, Lily. Men like Dominic Costa do not destroy men like me. They are merely background noise."

He leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her forehead—a gesture so tender, so full of unspoken emotion, that Lily felt a tear slip down her cheek.

"Come inside," Lorenzo whispered against her skin. "The wind is picking up, and I had the chef prepare the soup you liked from last week."

As they walked back toward the mansion arm-in-arm, Lily held onto his broad frame tightly. She realized then that her fear wasn't just about survival anymore. She was falling deeply, irrevocably in love with the mafia boss who had locked the kitchen door to save her.
