Chapter 9 - A Vow Made in the Dark

The private medical team arrived within twenty minutes, conducting a thorough ultrasound examination in the master suite. To Lorenzo's immense relief, the doctor confirmed that both Lily and the baby were completely unharmed; the stress had caused her blood pressure to spike, but the infant's heartbeat remained strong and steady.
By midnight, the storm had passed, leaving behind a clear, star-filled sky over Oyster Bay.
The master suite was quiet, illuminated only by the soft orange glow of the marble fireplace. Lily lay in the middle of the massive bed, propped up against several silk pillows, drinking warm milk.
Lorenzo sat on the edge of the mattress, stripped down to his white dress shirt and trousers, holding her small hand in his broad palm. He hadn't left her side for a single second since carrying her out of the conservatory.
"I should have had him eliminated weeks ago," Lorenzo said quietly, his voice heavy with self-reproach as he stared down at their joined hands. "I underestimated his desperation. I placed you and the child in danger."
Lily reached out with her free hand, resting her fingertips against his sharp jaw, forcing him to look at her.
"Lorenzo," she said softly, her voice filled with deep emotion. "You saved my life. Again. You protected me when no one else in the world cared whether I lived or died."
Lorenzo looked into her warm brown eyes, feeling a profound shift inside his soul. For fifteen years, he had believed that power was built on fear, that loyalty was bought with money, and that love was a liability that got men killed in his line of work.
But looking at Lily—this quiet, beautiful woman who had entered his life scrubbing his floors and had somehow captured his cold heart—he knew he would burn the entire city to the ground before he let anyone harm her.
He leaned forward, pressing his forehead gently against hers.
"I am not letting you go, Lily," Lorenzo whispered, his voice thick with uncharacteristic vulnerability. "Not ever. I want you to stay here, not as a guest, not as someone under my protection... but as my wife."
Lily’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes widened as she looked at him, searching his face to see if she was dreaming.
"Lorenzo... your capos... your world..." she stammered softly. "I am a maid with no family, no status—"
"I am the head of the Moretti family," Lorenzo interrupted with absolute, undeniable authority. "I do not answer to my capos. I do not answer to the syndicate. I make the rules in this city." He lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a warm kiss against her knuckles. "And my rule is that you belong at my side."
Tears of pure happiness filled Lily's eyes, shining like diamonds in the firelight. She pulled his face closer, pressing her lips against his in a sweet, lingering kiss that tasted of warmth, safety, and a future she had never dared to dream of.
"Yes," she whispered against his lips. "Yes, Lorenzo."
Lorenzo smiled—a genuine, radiant smile—and leaned down, placing his large palm gently over her rounded belly. Beneath his broad hand, he felt a sudden, soft kick from the life growing inside her.
Lorenzo chuckled softly, a low rumble in his chest. "He’s strong."
May you like
"Or she," Lily smiled back, resting her hand over his. "She might be as stubborn as her father."
Lorenzo looked at her, his dark eyes filled with a fierce, quiet devotion. "Then she will inherit an empire."
