Chapter 5 - The Master of the House

The transition from a invisible staff member to a protected resident of the Moretti estate was swift, absolute, and deeply unsettling for Lily.

By noon, Mrs. Gable, the usually stern and unyielding house manager, arrived at the west wing suite accompanied by two seamstresses carrying racks of soft linen dresses, silk robes, and tailored maternity wear. Mrs. Gable did not issue orders or hand Lily a cleaning schedule; instead, she bowed her head respectfully, addressing Lily as "Miss Lily" with a degree of deference that made Lily's face flush with embarrassment.

"Mr. Moretti has instructed us to clear your old room in the staff quarters," Mrs. Gable explained professionally, holding out a pair of soft leather slippers for Lily to step into. "Your personal belongings have already been brought up. If any of these garments are uncomfortable, the tailors will alter them immediately."

"Mrs. Gable, please," Lily pleaded softly, standing in the middle of the luxurious dressing room. "You don't have to call me 'Miss.' I am just Lily. I can clean my own room—"

"Mr. Moretti’s orders are explicit," Mrs. Gable interrupted firmly, though her eyes softened slightly as she looked at the young woman's pale face. "You are not to lift a finger in this house. You are under his direct care. To disobey those instructions would put my own position at risk, child."

Lily said nothing more. She realized that trying to argue against Lorenzo's orders was like trying to turn back the ocean tide.

Later that afternoon, Lorenzo sent for her.

Matteo escorted her down to the ground floor, leading her past the grand foyer and into the estate's private library—a massive, two-story room lined with thousands of leather-bound books, floor-to-ceiling mahogany shelves, and a roaring stone fireplace.

Lorenzo sat behind a massive teak desk, reviewing a stack of financial documents. He looked up as she stepped inside, gesturing for Matteo to close the double doors behind her.

"Sit," Lorenzo said, nodding toward the plush leather chair across from his desk.

Lily walked forward tentatively, smoothing the fabric of the light blue linen dress Mrs. Gable had chosen for her. She sat down on the edge of the leather chair, folding her hands tightly in her lap.

"Are the accommodations in the west wing to your liking?" he asked, setting his gold fountain pen down on the blotter.

"They are... far too grand for me, Mr. Moretti," she replied honestly. "I don't know how to thank you for what you did... but I feel out of place. The rest of the staff look at me as if I am an intruder."

"They look at you with respect because they know you are under my personal protection," Lorenzo stated simply. He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a thick Manila folder, sliding it across the polished teak surface toward her. "Open it."

Lily hesitated, then reached out and opened the folder. Inside were several pages of legal documents bearing the official seal of Mount Sinai Hospital, along with a stack of bank receipts stamped with red ink that read: PAID IN FULL.

Her eyes widened as she read the numbers. The three hundred and forty thousand dollars of debt accumulated during her mother’s cancer treatments—the crushing weight that had forced her to drop out of college and take a cleaning job—had been wiped out entirely.

"Mr. Moretti..." her voice choked, her fingers trembling against the heavy paper. "This... this is over three hundred thousand dollars..."

"It is settled," Lorenzo said casually, leaning back in his executive chair. "Mount Sinai has issued a full discharge of the debt. You no longer owe a single cent to anyone."

Tears streamed down Lily's cheeks, but for the first time in two years, they were not tears of terror or exhaustion. They were tears of overwhelming, incomprehensible relief. She looked up at him, her chest heaving.

"Why?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the crackle of the fireplace. "Why would you do this for me? I have nothing to give you in return. I am just a girl who cleaned your floors."

Lorenzo stood up from his desk and walked around the heavy teak furniture until he was standing right beside her chair. He leaned down, placing one hand on the armrest, bringing his dark, powerful face close to hers.

"You brought truth into my home when everyone else brought lies," Lorenzo said quietly, his gaze piercing through her. "Vincent was stealing from my Queens operations for six months while smiling to my face. You opened my eyes to the rot inside my own organization."

He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear.

"Furthermore," Lorenzo added, his tone softening into a low, possessive rumble, "you are bearing a child in a cold world without a family to back you. Under my roof, no one stands alone. You and your child belong to the Moretti sanctuary now."

Lily looked into his dark, unwavering eyes, feeling a strange, intoxicating warmth bloom in her chest. For months, she had viewed Lorenzo Moretti as the most dangerous man in the city—a shadow to be avoided at all costs. But sitting here in his library, bathed in the warm glow of the fire, she realized a fundamental truth: to the rest of the world, Lorenzo was a monster, but to her, he was the only shield she had ever known.

"What do you expect from me, Lorenzo?" she asked, using his first name for the very first time.

May you like

A slow, rare smile touched the corners of Lorenzo’s sharp lips—a smile that transformed his intimidating face into something strikingly handsome.

"I expect you to stay," Lorenzo whispered, his hand resting gently over hers. "And let me take care of you."
