Chapter 4 - THE WHISPER IN THE HALLWAY

By the fourth day at the estate, little Liam had made a remarkable recovery. Under Elena’s strict supervision, the baby was taking fresh, untampered formula every three hours, gaining weight, and smiling softly whenever Elena hummed her grandmother’s old lullaby.

Despite the infant's improvement, Elena felt like a prisoner in a golden cage. Her movements were restricted to the East Wing, and every time she walked into the main hallways, guards in dark suits followed at a discreet distance.

It was late on a Thursday evening. Liam was fast asleep in his crib. Elena decided to walk down to the estate’s private medical kitchen to prepare the midnight feeding supplies herself, refusing to trust anyone else with the child’s nutrition.

As she walked down the dimly lit service corridor on the ground floor, she heard hushed voices coming from the pantry room.

Elena stopped, pressing her back against the cool stone wall.

“...he’s getting suspicious,” a man’s voice whispered urgently. “The private security team searched the central pharmacy logs yesterday. If they trace the shipment back to the docklands, we’re all dead.”

“Keep your voice down!” a woman’s sharp voice snapped back. It was unmistakably Mrs. Gable, the household manager. “Adrian is paranoia personified right now. He hasn't left the estate in three days. That new nurse is watching the baby like a hawk.”

“Then eliminate the nurse,” the man urged ruthlessly. “Make it look like an accidental overdose or a medical error. Once she’s out of the picture, we can finish what we started with the kid.”

“No,” Mrs. Gable warned firmly. “If anything happens to that girl, Adrian will burn this house to the ground with all of us inside. We wait for the Moretti family to make their move at the harbor meeting on Saturday. Once Adrian leaves the estate to handle the harbor, we strike.”

Elena felt her blood turn to ice. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She slowly backed away, trying not to make a single sound on the polished wooden floor.

Suddenly, her heel caught the edge of a decorative floor runner. She stumbled backward, bumping against an antique porcelain vase on a side table.

Clang!

The heavy base of the vase rattled against the marble top.

“Who’s there?!” the man’s voice shouted from inside the pantry.

Elena didn't wait. She turned around and ran as fast as her legs could carry her, her rubber-soled nursing shoes making frantic squeaks against the floor. She sprinted down the long hallway, turning corners blindly in the dimly lit mansion.

Footsteps heavy and fast pounded behind her.

“Stop!” a voice yelled from the shadows.

Elena panicked, ducking into a dark recessed doorway. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to control her ragged breathing as the heavy footsteps rushed past her hiding spot and continued down the main corridor.

Trembling uncontrollably, Elena waited ten seconds before slipping out of the doorway. She ran straight toward Adrian’s private study in the West Wing—a room she had been strictly forbidden to enter.

She didn't knock. She threw open the double mahogany doors and burst inside.

Adrian was sitting at an enormous dark wood desk, surrounded by map displays and glowing computer monitors. Three of his senior lieutenants stood around the desk, holding tactical folders.

Every man in the room drew their weapon in a fraction of a second, aiming straight at the doorway.

Adrian’s eyes widened when he saw Elena standing there, panting, her face pale as milk, tears of fear shining in her eyes.

“Lower your weapons,” Adrian commanded instantly, stepping around the desk and walking rapidly toward her. “Now!”

The lieutenants immediately holstered their guns and backed away.

Adrian reached Elena, grabbing her gently by her shoulders to steady her trembling frame. “Elena? What happened? Is Liam alright?”

“Liam is fine,” Elena panted, clutching Adrian’s forearm tightly. “Adrian... it’s Mrs. Gable. She’s working with the Moretti family.”

The atmosphere in the room turned instantly lethal. Adrian’s jaw locked, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

“What did you hear?” Adrian asked, his voice chillingly calm.

Elena took a ragged breath, forcing herself to articulate every word. “I heard her speaking to a man in the service pantry. They mentioned the docklands shipment... and the Moretti family. They said they were going to strike on Saturday when you leave for the harbor meeting.”

She paused, looking up into his eyes, her voice shaking. “And... they were talking about eliminating me to get to Liam.”

A terrifying, dark fire flared in Adrian’s eyes. The air around him seemed to crackle with raw, unrestrained rage. He tightened his grip on her shoulders, bringing her closer to his chest in a protective embrace.

“Nobody is touching you,” Adrian whispered, his voice dark and absolute. “And nobody is touching my son.”

He looked over her head at his chief security officer. “Lock down the mansion quietly. Do not let Mrs. Gable or her contact know we know. We are going to turn their Saturday plan into their funeral.”
