Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Forty-Five Seconds

Arthur Vance did not speak into his satellite phone with anger or excitement. He spoke with the flat, clinical tone of an executioner verifying a ledger entry.
"Authorize Protocol Omega on Entity Sterling Global," Arthur said into the encrypted receiver. "Execute cross-border asset seizures across the Zurich and Cayman accounts. Trigger the immediate call-back of the two-billion-dollar mezzanine loan facility. Notify the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding the offshore fraud ledgers provided by Alpha-One. Now."
He tapped the screen once and placed the phone back inside his tuxedo pocket.
Ten feet away, on the main ballroom stage, Julian was basking in the applause. He adjusted his silk bowtie and stepped closer to the podium microphone, clutching Chloe’s hand tightly.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing with booming arrogance. "Tonight is not just a celebration of Sterling Global’s three-billion-dollar valuation! It is a celebration of efficiency! We cut the dead weight! Tomorrow at nine AM, when the bell rings on Wall Street, we go public, and we take our rightful place at the top of the financial world!"
The crowd cheered. Several high-profile hedge fund managers raised their glasses in a toast. Chloe beamed, leaning over to kiss Julian’s cheek right in front of the press cameras.
Then, the first phone buzzed.
It was not Julian’s phone. It was the phone of Marcus Thorne, the Chief Financial Officer of Sterling Global, who was standing in the front row of the VIP pit. Marcus pulled his device from his pocket, glanced at the screen, and instantly froze. His face went from a healthy, scotch-flushed pink to an ashen, ghostly white.
A second later, three more phones chimed in unison. Then ten. Then fifty.
Across the grand ballroom, the hum of celebration began to fracture into sharp, panicked murmurs. Wall Street analysts began frantically tapping their screens, staring at sudden, terrifying notifications from Bloomberg Terminals and internal trading desks.
Julian frowned on stage, looking out at the sudden disruption. "What's going on down there? Marcus, what is it?"
Marcus Thorne scrambled up the wooden steps of the stage, his polished leather shoes slipping slightly on the carpet. He practically tackled Julian away from the microphone, grabbing his arm with trembling fingers.
"Julian... Julian, look at the terminal!" Marcus hissed, his voice leaking through the stage monitors. "Our primary liquidity pool in Zurich just went black!"
"What are you talking about?!" Julian snapped, trying to push Marcus away while maintaining his confident posture for the cameras. "Zurich is fine! The sovereign fund cleared the balance two hours ago!"
"It didn't clear!" Marcus panicked, holding up his tablet screen. "Look! Vance Capital just filed a emergency default notice with the Delaware chancery court! They pulled the entire two-billion-dollar credit facility! They’ve declared our treasury insolvent!"
Julian’s face twisted in disbelief. "That’s impossible! Arthur Vance is standing right over there! He’s our lead underwriter!"
Julian turned his head sharply toward the back of the room, his eyes scanning the shadows of the VIP section.
He saw Arthur Vance standing beside the glass partition.
And right beside Arthur stood me.
I was leaning calmly against a velvet pillar, my bandaged hands folded over my wet silk gown, watching him with a cold, unblinking stare.
Before Julian could process the sight, his own phone in his breast pocket began to vibrate furiously. It wasn't a call. It was an emergency push notification from the Federal District Court of Southern New York.
Chloe leaned over Julian’s shoulder, her eyes widening in horror as she read the red banner across his screen:
IMMEDIATE ARREST WARRANT ISSUED: JULIAN STERLING. CHARGES: SECURITIES FRAUD, MONEY LAUNDERING, BANK FRAUD, AND CORPORATE EMBEZZLEMENT.
The crowd in the ballroom went wild. Photographers who had been snapping photos of my humiliation spun their long lenses around, pointing them directly at Julian’s sweating, pale face on stage.

"What is this?!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking violently into the microphone. "This is a glitch! Security! Shut down the Wi-Fi! Clear the room!"
Two tall men in dark tactical suits wearing Federal Marshal badges pushed through the grand double doors at the back of the ballroom, moving straight past the gaping socialites toward the stage.
