Chapter 9 - The Final Ledger

Eight months after the night at the Plaza Hotel.
The summer sun was warm and golden over the manicured gardens of the Vance estate in Bedminster.
I sat in a comfortable white wicker armchair on the sunlit terrace, wearing a loose, elegant white linen dress. Beside me sat a wicker bassinet draped in soft organic cotton.
Inside the bassinet lay my two-month-old daughter, Victoria Vance—a beautiful, healthy baby girl with bright, curious dark eyes and a thick head of dark hair.
Arthur Vance walked out onto the terrace carrying a tray with fresh lemonade and a thin leather folder. He set the tray down on the glass table and handed me the folder.
"The final sentencing hearing in Southern District Court concluded an hour ago," Arthur reported smoothly, taking a seat across from me.
I opened the folder, reviewing the official court document inside.
Julian Sterling had been sentenced to forty-two years in federal prison with no possibility of parole for twenty-five years. All his personal property, including his family's ancestral real estate in Connecticut, had been liquidated to satisfy the federal restitution orders.
Chloe had received a seven-year sentence in a medium-security facility following her full cooperation agreement.
"Harrison Reed attempted to file one final appeal on Julian’s behalf," Arthur added, sipping his lemonade. "Claiming severe psychological distress and requesting a transfer to a private medical facility."
"And the judge?" I asked, looking down at my sleeping daughter.
"The judge denied the motion in three minutes," Arthur replied with a quiet, satisfied smile. "Julian will serve his full term in Florence, Colorado."
I closed the folder and set it aside on the table, letting out a long, quiet breath.
The lingering ghosts of my past—the five years of manipulation, the cold champagne poured over my head, the cruel whispers in the dark—finally dissolved into nothingness under the warm summer sky.
My baby let out a tiny, soft coo, stretching her small hands into the air.
I reached into the bassinet, gently letting her tiny fingers wrap around my thumb. Her grip was strong, firm, and full of life.

"She has your father’s hands, Claire," Arthur said softly, looking at the child with deep affection.
"She has our family’s strength, Arthur," I corrected him gently, looking out over the four hundred acres of green hills that stretched as far as the eye could see. "She will grow up knowing that she belongs to an empire built on truth, honor, and unshakeable power."
