Chapter 3 - The Broken Empire

The heavy, polished doors of the Plaza Hotel ballroom slammed open with a loud bang as six armed Federal Marshals marched down the central aisle, flanked by agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The high-society crowd parted like the Red Sea, women shrieking as they scrambled out of the way, dropping champagne glasses that shattered across the marble floor.
"Julian Sterling!" the lead Marshal shouted, his voice cutting through the panic like a blade. "Do not move! Step away from the podium and put your hands where we can see them!"
Julian stood frozen on the stage, his mouth hanging open, his face completely drained of color. Beside him, Chloe let out a sharp, terrified shriek and immediately dropped Julian’s arm, taking three fast steps backward as if his touch were toxic.
"Chloe, what are you doing?!" Julian rasped, turning to her with wide, frantic eyes. "Call our legal team! Call standard Chartered! Fix this!"
"Get away from me, Julian!" Chloe hissed, her emerald dress rustling as she backed away toward the curtain exit. "I don't know anything about your offshore accounts! I was just an employee!"
"You signed the authorization ledgers, Chloe!" Marcus Thorne yelled from the side of the stage, his voice filled with hysterical panic. "We all signed them! He told us Vance Capital approved it!"
The Federal Marshals reached the stage, mounting the stairs with practiced efficiency. The lead agent grabbed Julian’s arm, twisted it behind his back, and slammed him down onto the smooth surface of the oak podium.
SNAP.
The metallic sound of steel handcuffs locking around Julian’s wrists echoed clearly through the silent ballroom.
"Julian Sterling, you are under arrest for federal securities fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement," the agent read coldly into Julian’s ear. "You have the right to remain silent..."
"This is a mistake!" Julian screamed, his cheek pressed flat against the wood of the podium, his eyes wide with wild, unadulterated terror. "I’m worth three billion dollars! I am the CEO of Sterling Global! Call Arthur Vance! Where is Arthur?!"
Julian lifted his head desperately, searching the room through the blinding sea of camera flashes.
His eyes locked onto the back of the room.
Arthur Vance walked slowly out of the VIP section, stepping into the bright light of the ballroom aisle. But he didn't walk toward the stage to help Julian. He walked three paces behind me, his hands folded respectfully behind his back, following my lead as if he were a loyal captain serving his queen.
I walked slowly down the central aisle, my wet silk gown brushing against the fallen rose petals on the floor. I stopped at the foot of the stage, looking up at Julian as he struggled in the grips of the federal agents.
"Claire..." Julian gasped, his voice trembling violently. "Claire, tell them! Tell them it’s a mistake! You know our finances! You ran the internal audits for the first three years!"
I stopped two feet from him, looking down at his pathetic, handcuffed form.
"I did run the audits, Julian," I said softly, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent room. "Which is why I know exactly where you hid the stolen treasury funds. I’m the one who sent the decrypted ledgers to the Department of Justice forty-five minutes ago."
Julian stared at me, his jaw dropping in absolute, crushing horror. "You... you did this?"
"You called me a penniless parasite, Julian," I murmured, leaning in slightly so only he could hear my words over the low hum of the crowd. "You thought my father was a nobody. You forgot that before I changed my name to marry you, my father’s name was Victor Vance. The founder of the syndicate that built your life."
Julian’s eyes went completely wide. "Victor... Victor Vance?"
"Take him away," Arthur Vance ordered from behind me, his voice cold and final.
The agents hoisted Julian to his feet, dragging him down the stage steps past the sea of flashing cameras. As he passed me, Julian looked at my pregnant belly, his face contorted in a terrifying mix of regret, fear, and absolute ruin.
"Claire! Please!" Julian sobbed as he was hauled toward the exit doors. "Claire! That’s my baby! Please!"

I didn't answer. I turned my back on him, looking out at the stunned crowd of New York’s elite who had watched my humiliation less than ten minutes ago.
They were staring at me now not with pity or disgust, but with absolute, breathless terror.
