Chapter 4 - The Clean Sweep

By one o'clock in the morning, the Plaza Hotel was empty of guests, but the street outside on Central Park South was choked with news vans, police cruisers, and blacked-out SUVs.

The media was in a frenzy. The headline breaking across every major network on the planet was identical: STERLING GLOBAL COLLAPSES IN MINUTES: CEO ARRESTED AT FIVE-YEAR GALA FOR MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR FRAUD.

I sat in the private executive suite on the top floor of the Plaza, wrapped in a plush white velvet robe that Arthur had provided. A private physician had already examined me and the baby, confirming that the stress and cold had caused no harm to my child.

Arthur Vance stood near the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the flashing red and blue lights on the street below. He held a secure tablet, reviewing the real-time destruction of Julian’s assets.

"Julian’s personal accounts have been frozen by federal order," Arthur reported cleanly. "The penthouse on Park Avenue, the estate in the Hamptons, the private jet in Teterboro, and all liquid holdings in Sterling Global have been placed under federal receivership."

"And Chloe?" I asked, sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea.

"Arrested at JFK three twenty minutes ago," Arthur replied with a cold, thin smile. "She tried to board a private charter to Dubai using a forged secondary passport. The Marshals intercepted her at the tarmac. She is currently crying in a holding cell at Lower Manhattan Federal Detention Center."

I set my teacup down on the saucer with a quiet clink.

"And the board of directors?"

"Terrified," Arthur said softly. "They realized within twenty minutes of the arrest that Vance Capital owns ninety-five percent of the physical voting proxies. I called an emergency board meeting for eight AM tomorrow. They will formally elect you as the sole Receiver and Managing Trustee of the remaining restructuring assets."

I looked out the window at the Manhattan skyline. The city lights sparkled in the dark, vast and unfeeling.

Five years ago, I had walked into Julian’s life as a young financial analyst. I had loved him. I had believed in his vision, working eighty hours a week beside him in his small startup office, refining his models, fixing his compliance errors, and helping him build Sterling Global from nothing.

When we married, he promised me that we were partners. But as the valuation grew into the billions, his greed devoured his humanity. He began to see me not as his equal, but as a liability—a woman who knew too much about the shaky foundations of his corporate empire.

He thought he could frame me, humiliate me, and discard me like trash on national television to protect his fortune.

"He never knew who my father was, Arthur," I said softly, looking at the golden reflection of my ringless hand on the glass.

"Your father kept you hidden from the world for a reason, Claire," Arthur said gently, walking over to stand behind my chair. "Sovereign Vance knew that men like Julian Sterling exist in every corner of finance. He built the network to ensure that if anyone ever tried to destroy you, the world would burn before you fell."

A light knock sounded at the suite door.

Arthur walked over and opened it. Marco, Arthur’s chief security director, stepped inside holding a secure leather folder.

"Miss Vance," Marco said, bowing his head respectfully. "Julian Sterling’s defense attorney, Harrison Reed, is on line one from the precinct. He says Julian is having a severe panic attack in his holding cell and is begging to speak with you for five minutes."

I turned my head slowly, looking at the leather folder.

"Tell Harrison Reed," I said smoothly, my voice cold and unyielding, "that if he calls back again, I will buy his law firm by noon tomorrow and fire him on the spot."

Marco’s lips twitched with a hidden smile. "Understood, Miss Vance."
