Chapter 1 - THE MESSAGE

At 11:47 p.m., twelve-year-old Lily Carter made the kind of mistake that can change a life.

Her hands were shaking so badly that she could barely hold the phone.

She was hiding beneath her bed.

Not because she was playing a game.

Not because she wanted to scare her mother.

She was hiding because her mother's boyfriend was screaming downstairs.

And this time, the screaming sounded different.

Lily pressed both hands over her mouth as another crash shook the little house.

“Please,” her mother cried. “Ethan, stop!”

Lily squeezed her eyes shut.

She had heard arguments before.

She had heard doors slam.

She had heard her mother cry quietly in the bathroom after telling Lily everything was fine.

But tonight, there had been a terrible sound.

A slap.

Then another crash.

Then silence.

Lily crawled out from beneath the bed just far enough to reach the phone charger.

She grabbed her mother's old phone and stared at the screen.

She needed help.

But who?

Her father was gone.

Her grandmother lived three states away.

The neighbors never answered their door anymore.

Then Lily remembered something her mother had once told her.

“If you're ever really scared, call someone.”

Lily didn't know who that someone was.

She only remembered a number written on an old piece of paper inside the kitchen drawer.

She had copied it into her phone months ago.

She thought it belonged to a woman named Rosa.

It didn't.

With tears running down her cheeks, Lily typed:

He's beating my Mama. Please help.

She hit send.

Then she realized the number was wrong.

“Oh no…”

Downstairs, something shattered.

Lily froze.

Her phone vibrated.

A reply.

Who is this?

She stared at the words.

Then typed:

I'm Lily. I think I sent this to the wrong number.

Three seconds passed.

Another message appeared.

Where are you?

Lily hesitated.

She shouldn't tell a stranger.

But then she heard her mother's voice.

“Lily! Stay upstairs!”

The words were followed by a man's furious roar.

Lily's fingers moved.

Maple Street. House 18. Please hurry.

The stranger replied almost instantly.

Lock your bedroom door. Get away from the windows.

Then:

I'm on my way.

Lily stared at the screen.

She didn't know who she had contacted.

She didn't know that the man holding that phone was feared across half the city.

She didn't know that his name was Adrian Vale.

And she certainly didn't know that Adrian Vale had spent ten years building an empire around one rule:

Never get involved in another family's problems.

Until tonight.

He read Lily's message again.

Then he stood.

His driver looked up.

“Boss?”

Adrian slipped the phone into his coat.

“Maple Street.”

The driver frowned.

“Now?”

Adrian's expression hardened.

May you like

“Now.”

And for the first time in years, the most dangerous man in the city was about to break his own rules for a child he had never met.
